Very unusual - the first exact reprint of the first edition: "When the first edition appeared in November 1859 Sir Charles Lyell protested at this speculation. Darwin replied "Will you send me one line to say whether I must strike out about the secondary whale it goes to my heart." In all later editions it was struck out. Note that apart from the many alterations in the manuscript of the passage must have been again heavily corrected in the proof since many differences appear in the first edition page 158 of the present reprint." The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn but remain square and sturdy. Internally there is a previous owner's signature under the front board along with light tanning and sporadic foxing throughout. His distinguished body of work was largely responsible for elevating the wood engraving to an art form in twentieth-century America. Landacre's linocuts and wood engravings of landscapes still lifes nudes and abstractions are celebrated for their technical virtuosity and mastery of design.In March 1932 the artist and his wife moved to a rustic house in the Echo Park neighborhood also known as Edendale near downtown Los Angeles where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Landacre died in 1963 soon after-and emotionally resulting from-the death of his wife who had been an essential working companion for 38 years even helping the artist late in his life pull impressions from the formidable Washington hand press.
