The book was published on 2 July 1875 in a standard binding without inserted advertisements. It is stated that 3000 were printed of which 2700 were sold to the trade at once. This cannot be strictly true because both the second and third thousands of the same year stated their thousands on the title pages" Freeman. Octavo. 30 wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Original green bead-grain cloth neatly rebacked with the original gilt lettered and decorated spine laid down corners refurbished blind-panelled covers brown coated endpapers. Down Beckenham Kent 13th September 1881 8vo 205 x 131mm horizontal mailing folds 1pp. in fine condition signed "Charles Darwin"; with retained copy of Harmer's letter to Darwin Wick near Arundel 1881 8vo 205 x 130mm horizontal mailing folds weak at folds.</p><p>A fine unpublished letter to John Harmer thanking him for his account of a beetle attacking a six-inch worm and for the beetle itself which Harmer had enclosed.</p><p>Harmer had captured the beetle in Arundel Park in Sussex after witnessing the beetle attack the worm he writes "not having noticed any thing of the kind before I carried him home to satisfy myself whether such was his food or whether his appetite would be affected by captivity. He has since disposed of the fluids of two more which he cuts up in a very business like manner." Harmer fed it more worms then sent it to Darwin in case there was "an element of interest in the circumstance".</p><p>Darwin's response reads "I am much obliged for your kindness. I had read that beetles attacked worms but did not know how far this was authentic. The beetle sent is Carabus Violaceus; & the genus may be considered as the tiger of the insect world."</p><p>The posthumous revised edition of <em>"The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms"</em> 1882 notes that "the larger species of Carabus and Staphylinus… attack… worms ferociously". This observation is absent from the first edition of 1881 so it seems Harmer's efforts were put to good use.</p><p>Not in the Darwin Correspondence Project but Harmer's letter to Darwin is DCP-LETT-13332.</p>

"While at the University of Cambridge the student Charles Darwin became an enthusiastic insect collector. He sent Stephens records of the rarer insects he had captured and was delighted when Illustrations of British entomology gave him credit for capturing insects described in 33 entries quoting his words in all but two of the cases. Darwin recalled in his autobiography "No poet ever felt more delight at seeing his first poem published than I did at seeing in Stephen's Illustrations of British Insects the magic words 'captured by C. Darwin Esq.'" though the closest wording as published actually appeared slightly differently as "captured by the Rev. F. W. Hope and C. Darwin Esq. in North Wales" and "Taken in North Wales by C. Darwin Esq." – Wikip. / The exquisite plates are colored by hand after drawings by Charles M. Curtis 1795-1839 and John Obadiah Westwood 1905-1893 who was among the first entomologists with an academic position at Oxford University. Although he worked on insect classification and diversity for more than sixty years from the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species he never accepted the ideas on evolution. / James Francis Stephens was an English entomologist and naturalist. He was elected fellow of the Linnean Society on 17 February 1815 and of the Zoological Society of London in 1826. From 1815 to 1825 he took a great interest in ornithology and contributed to the work of George Shaw 1751-1813. He was granted leave from office to assist William Elford Leach in 1818 to arrange the insect collection at the British Museum and eventually described as many as 2800 British insect species. In 1833 he was founder of what became the Royal Entomological Society of London. Stephens made a large insect collection that included many specimens. After his death the insect collection was purchased by the British Museum. PROVENANCE: Bruce Lowther 1926-1999 Collection c/o J.T. Barnes 503 Royal Trust Building Victoria B.C. Lowther was a journalist broadcaster author and historian with a particular interest in British Columbia labor history. Complete with all plates and pages. Bindings are mixed. Seven volumes light tan full leather goat with Yapp style bindings. Marbled endpapers and edges. Then two half leather marbled board bindings and one museum library rebind ~75 years old. The interiors are excellent except for vol. 6 Mandibulata which has water toning upper outer corner affecting last quarter of volume and final two plates. Haustellata volume 4 has museum library stamp on title page and plates are in a back pocket; has interesting old scientific marginalia. The value here is in the matching 7 volumes Haustellata 1-3; Mandibulata 1-4. First appearance of Darwin's work in print. See Freeman pages 19-20. A note on the Yapp bindings: These are clearly 19th century bindings. I find no clues to identify the binder. The leather is limp. When I got this set all edges were curled but over time I have been able to flatten all the bottom edges and some of the front edges; so I believe all edges could be flattened to their original intention with some determination. The paper was first published in 1865 in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London Freeman 833 later same year it was corrected and published in book form from which the present translation is made Freeman 1834 Darwin described the origins and writing of this book in his autobiography: "In the autumn of 1864 I finished a long paper on Climbing Plants and sent it to the Linnean Society. The writing of this paper cost me four months: but I was so unwell when I received the proof-sheets that I was forced to leave them very badly and often obscurely expressed. The paper was little noticed but when in 1875 it was corrected and published as aseparate book it sold well. I was led to take up this subject by reading a short paper by Asa Gray published in 1858 on the movements of the tendrils of a Cucurbitacean plant. He sent me seeds and on raising some plants I was so much fascinated and perplexed by the revolving movements of the tendrils and stems which movements are really very simple though appearing at first very complex that I procured various other kinds of Climbing Plants and studied the whole subject. I was all the more attracted to it from not being at all satisfied with the explanation which Henslow gave us in his Lectures about Twining plants namely that they had a natural tendency to grow up in a spire. This explanation proved quite erroneous. Some of the adaptations displayed by climbing plants are as beautiful as those by Orchids for ensuring cross-fertilisation."The first edition did not appear in America nor was it translated in Darwin's lifetime but has a recent facsimile.
