301 pages including index and reference notes. A pioneering exploration into the past history and present state of the most neglected aspect of our environment: the SOUNDSCAPE, a term coined by the author. The soundscape is our sonic environment, the ever-present array of noises, pleasant and unpleasant, loud and soft, heard or ignored, that we all live with. From the murmur of bees to the blast of an explosion, this vast, ever-changing compendium of bird-song, jackhammers, chamber music, screams, train whistles and rain has been a part of human existence since the beginning of time. Dust jacket is price-clipped and shows light to moderate wear with a quarter inch tear to bottom edge of back panel. Book clean and unmarked with light bumping and mild warp to front board. 13890Strong's letters both from Geneva on letterheads of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment 29 August 1972 and the United Nations Environment Programme 26 July 1973. Four of Bourne's drafts from Flitwick Bedfordshire 1972-1975. The seven items are in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Strong's two letters are each 1p. 8vo and are both on thin paper with slight wear to the edges; the second letter is docketed on the reverse by Bourne. In his first letter Strong congratulates Bourne on 'the new journal "The Environment This Month"'. He was 'favourably impressed with the first issue' and congratulates Bourne 'on the initiative you have taken in filling in such a promising way the need which existed for a high quality international journal on environmental affairs'. He undertakes to 'prepare a piece for the journal about the Stockholm Conference' and will get Robert Schiffer to get in touch with Bourne about it. In his second letter Strong declines Bourne's invitation 'to address the Man/Food Equation Symposium to be held on 20-21 September 1973' as 'the United Nations Environment Programme will be in the process of establishing its headquarters in Nairobi at that time and I find myself unable to accept any additional commitments during that period'. The drafts of Bourne's five letters to Strong total 5pp. 4to and 5pp 8vo. All are dated and all but the third which gives no place are addressed from 17 Church Road Flitwick Bedfordshire. In the first letter following on from a meeting with Strong at the 'W.A.Y. meeting in Manchester' he discusses his 'Habitat Classification Atlas' project and 'Project Manhive' scheme. In the second letter he gives an update on the 'Atlas' project. The third letter concerns a 'Man/Food Equation Symposium' which he is organising 'to the continuance of the Stockholm ideal'. In the fourth letter following a 'chance meeting in Victoria' he gives information on 'the mapping scheme I told you about first when we were together in Manchester and subsequently in a letter'. In the last letter Bourne discusses Strong's departure from UNEP and gives news of his own activities. Strong's letters both from Geneva, on letterheads of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, 29 August 1972, and unknown
