"Georges Cuvier 1769-1832 made a peer of France in 1819 in recognition of his work was perhaps the most important European scientist of his day. His most famous work Le Règne Animal was published in French in 1817; Edward Griffith 1790-1858 a solicitor and amateur naturalist embarked on in 1824 with a team of colleagues an English version which resulted in this illustrated sixteen-volume edition with additional material published between 1827 and 1835. Cuvier was the first biologist to compare the anatomy of fossil animals with living species and he named the now familiar 'mastodon' and 'megatherium'. Early American edition of "Règne animal distribué d'après son organisation" 1817 abridged into one volume following the four-volume edition published by Carvill in 1831. This copy printed in the year of the author's death 1832 by James Kay Jun. & Co. Philadelphia printers to the American Philosophical Society. Deaccessioned from non-circulating museum research library nominally marked/stamped. Brown swirled cloth over boards rubbed with some exposure along fore- and bottom edges rounded/exposed corners lacking spine panel mended by black cloth tape. Front board is detached from text block but still attached by the cloth tape. 532 pp. This edition is not illustrated. Text block is firmly bound with the exception of a few loose or detached blanks at rear showing scattered foxing mostly light ranging to moderate with many leaves showing none. Endpapers are considerably foxed. Embossed library stamp on lower title page a few scattered internal stamps. Bottom corners of most leaves show slight dampstaining in margins only. 1870 presentation inscription on front blank. Fair to Good exterior solid VG to VG interior would be significantly improved simply by rebacking. This work was published as Vol. XI of The Animal Kingdom: Arranged in Conformity with its Organization 1827-35 an English translation of Cuvier's Le règne animal 1817 with additional materials. The present volume is "apparently a supplement Pidgeon prepared for Cuvier's Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles" Smith p. 188 and includes illustrations reproduced from that work. The question of human contemporaneity with extinct fossil mammalia is discussed on pp. 21-36: "The result then of all our investigations serves to prove that the human race was not coeval with the fossil genera and species: for no reason can be assigned why man should have escaped from the revolutions which destroyed those other beings nor if he did not escape why his remains should not be found intermingled with theirs" p. 22. Scheuchzer's Homo diluvii testis later shown to be the fossilized remains of an extinct giant salamander is discussed on pp. 333-334. OCLC states that this volume is called "Supplementary volume on the fossils"; however this notice is not present in this copy.
