Interessante e curiosa dissertazione in cui l'A., facendo riferimento a testi antichi, tratta del flutto decumano ovvero della decima onda che, quando il mare e' in tempesta, risulta la piu' grande e imponente di tutte le precedenti. Vallotti cerca di spiegare l'origine di un tale fenomeno facendo anche riferimento alla scienza popolare in base alla quale il decimo uovo nato dalla stessa gallina e' il piu' grande degli altri. Infatti ovum decimum maius nascitur scrive Sesto Pompeo. Da cio' deriverebbe il termine 'decumano' utilizzato per indicare per tutto quello che ha una grandezza fuori dall'ordinario.

The author, who also wrote the Discovery of the Titanic, here describes his many feats including using bathyscaphs and submersible vehicles, exploring ocean life, geology. He describes his discovery of the Titanic, his inching down the liner's grand staircase, at 12,000 feet below sea level. He also explored the Bismarck, sunk in the second world war. It represented a significant breakthrough in deep sea exploration.
