Title-page + 30 pp + 3 full-page COLOR-PRINTED stipple-engraved plates with 14 figures in all. This is a specially-printed separata from Bory's "Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle" (17 volumes 8vo, Paris, 1822), a set of which Darwin took along during his journey aboard the H.M.S. Beagle. While it was printed 16mo, EACH LEAF HAS BEEN CAREFULLY INSET INTO A LARGER LEAF IN ORDER TO PRODUCE AN 8vo VOLUME SO THE PLATES WOULD NOT HAVE TO BE FOLDED (and indeed they are not). WorldCat locates only one copy of this offprint (Basel Universit‰tsbibliothek). 8vo. Bound in contemporary leather-backed marbled boards. Binding lightly worn. Internally fine and bright but for a few old scholarly annotations on figure 5. VERY RARE.
