1992BI-112Oxford U.K.: C.A.B. International 1992. Comprehensive classic text summarizes and synthesizes our knowledge of the main features of the development and transmission of parasitic nematodes of vertebrates and places this information within the context of the modern classification of the nematodes. The volume is unique in its comprehensive coverage and includes nematode parasites of humans domestic animals and wildlife including fish. After an introductory chapter the author systematically describes the biological characteristics of the 27 superfamilies of nematodes followed by families subfamilies and sometimes genera. Altogether some 561 particular species are reviewed most individually and approximately 2700 references cited. The book provides a unified zoological overview of development life cycles and transmission rather than emphasizing diseases caused by the parasites. It is a definitive reference work for parasitologists as well as for interest physicians veterinarians zoologist and wildlife and fisheries biologists. 578 pp. Illustrated. 1996PY-62Boulder CO.: Westview Press 1996. How do bats catch insects in the dark How do bees learn which flowers to visit How do food-storing birds remember where their hoards are Questions like these are addressed by neuroethology the branch of behavioral neuroscience concerned with analyzing the neural bases of naturally occurring behaviors. This book brings together thirteen chapters presenting findings on perceptual and cognitive processes in some of the most active areas of neuroethological research including auditory localization by bats and owls song perception and learning in birds pitch processing by frogs and toads imprinting in birds spatial memory in birds learning in bees and in Aplysia and electroreception in fish. A variety of approaches are represented such as field studies psychophysical tests electrophysiological experiments lesion studies comparative neuroanatomy and studies of development. Each chapter gives an up-to-date overview of a particular authors research and places it within the broader context of issues about animal perception and cognition. The book as a whole exemplifies how studying species and their particular specializations can inform general issues in psychology ethology and neuroscience. 329 pp. Illustrated. Dustjacket in mylar. Edwin Hartley Pratt was the founder of the Chicago-based Orificial Surgery Society in 1887. Orificial surgery sought to cure many of the physical and psychological ills of the body by surgical corrections to the various orifices mainly those below the waist. This movement in mainstream American medicine flourished until the 1920s and the numbers of those subjected to orificial surgery during its brief heyday are estimated to be in the tens of thousands. It is remembered mainly today for its advocacy of circumcision in both males and females. RARE in the 1887 First Edition a wonderful curiosity for any medical book collection !. W.t. Keener Hardcover

This is the first book devoted to the aquarium, and the marine biologist author's most popular work, published near the beginning of the craze where persons would collect specimens from the seashore and add them to their home aquariums, in the days before pet stores. It was Gosse who coined the name 'aquarium' after considering previous names such as vivarium and aqua-vivarium. Freeman 60: 'Gosse's second study of the sea-shore is full of infectious enthusiasm. It is as much about observations of marine animals in the wild, particularly those at the bottom of the tide and below, as it is about the servicing of a marine aquarium and was an important influence behind the mid-Victorian craze for keeping aquariums.' Barber (Heyday of Natural History) 117: 'The first and best was appropriately provided by Gosse in The Aquarium of 1854. . . it was the most successful of Gosse's books'. This second edition has additional plates and text that were not in the first edition of 1854, but includes all the superb original plates. Some of the text, especially the directions section has been re-written, other parts brought up-to-date and augmented.
