Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) è stato un biologo, naturalista, evoluzionista, artista, filosofo e medico tedesco che ha trascorso la vita studiando la flora e la fauna dalle montagne più alte fino agli oceani più profondi. Convinto sostenitore ed elaboratore delle teorie darwiniane sull'evoluzione, condannò le dottrine religiose, abbandonò la carriera di medico sul nascere, scrisse trattati filosofici, conseguì un dottorato in zoologia e coniò termini scientifici poi entrati nell'uso comune, come ecologia, phylum e cellula staminale. La sua immensa eredità ha affascinato, messo alla prova e diviso generazioni di studiosi. Ma qual era l'oggetto del suo lavoro? Come il suo predecessore Alexander von Humboldt, Haeckel non era interessato solo alle scoperte in sé ma anche alla loro divulgazione. Pertanto, realizzò centinaia di disegni, acquerelli e schizzi assai dettagliati dei suoi reperti, che poi pubblicò in diversi volumi nei primi anni del Novecento; tra questi, diverse collezioni di organismi marini e il maestoso Kunstformen der Natur (Le forme d'arte della Natura), vera e propria pietra angolare della sua intera opera. Meticolosa enciclopedia visiva degli esseri viventi, l'opera di Haeckel colpisce sia per la precisione delle illustrazioni e la cura delle ombreggiature sia per la comprensione dell'evoluzione organica e dello sviluppo cellulare. Dai pipistrelli alle cubomeduse, dalle lucertole ai licheni, dalle zampe di ragno alle anemoni di mare, l'accento è sempre posto sulle simmetrie e l'ordine alla base del mondo naturale, tanto da rivelare la bellezza persino degli animali più insospettabili. Le stampe non contribuirono soltanto allo studio della storia naturale ma influenzarono anche generazioni di artisti e architetti nel corso del Novecento, dagli esponenti dell'emergente Art Nouveau a nomi quali Hendrik Petrus Berlage, che si ispirò alle illustrazioni di Haeckel per il suo Beurs van Berlage. Very well-illustrated. The illustrated ads at the rear are for the author's other books. At the time, this was the ultimate aquaria book, at the peak of the aquarium hobby in the nineteenth century.
