Surprisingly scarce. The study of patterns and processes of evolution on islands has played an important role in the development of general theories of how and why evolution occurs. Small discrete pieces of the environment islands are frequently isolated from the continental processes of gene flow. They are often inhabited by unique species like the Komodo dragon dodos or daisies as tall as trees. They may display remarkable rapidity of diversifying evolution - nearly 1000 species of fruit-fly were formed in the Hawaiian archipelago in only a few million years. Thus it is easy to see why islands have been referred to as 'natural experiments'. Such studies are continuing to yield exciting new fields for investigation as theoreticians attack questions of genetic change in island models and empirical biologists seek explanations of adaptive radiations in archipelagos. This unique book surveys our current knowledge and understanding of island evolution in eighteen chapters written by experts on various aspects of microevolution speciation and adaptive radiation. They cover the major trends and processes displayed by plants and animals on tropical and temperate zone islands and in lakes and tropical forest refugia. The book closes with a discussion of several unresolved issues that deserve further study. First Edition. Paperback. Good. Oxford University Press Paperback

New Zealand with its long isolation from other lands and latitudes extending from subtropical to sub Antarctic has a unique flora and highly diverse vegetation. This book is a comprehensive description of that vegetation ranging from its origins to the major communities within which the plants exist. The text supported by over 300 photographs maps and diagrams has made an outstanding contribution to the understanding of the biology of these islands. This is a reprint of the volume originally published in 1991. Chapters 1 - 4 describe the New Zealand environment flora and fauna. They discuss the origin relationships life forms and reproductive aspects of the indigenous vegetation. Chapter 5 is a synopsis of vegetation types habitat classes and environmental processes; it also serves to define the terms that are described in the book. Chapter 6 contains an outline of the geographic divisions of the country. Chapters 7 - 9 offer expanded descriptions of plant communities preceded where appropriate by information on their structure and characteristic species and genera. The concluding chapters discuss ecologic functions and processes. Vegetation of New Zealand is an essential book for botanists ecologists conservationists and others who love New Zealand's plants animals and landscapes.
