The author received much help from the amateur botanist James Dickson which contributed immensely to the value of the book as a record of the mosses fungi and algae of the county. The Thirkleby Park library copy with book label on the front endpaper and Thomas Frankland's stamped signature on the verso of all the title pages. Sir Thomas Frankland was a notable botanist. Von Wulfen 1728 - 1805 was an Austrian botanist zoologist mineralogist alpinist and Jesuit priest and an early follower of Linnaeus and the binomial system. He is credited with discovering the flowering plants Wulfenia carinthiaca Saxifraga moschata and Stellaria bulbosa. In 1845 the lead molybdate mineral wulfenite was named in his honor. Two volumes small octavo pp xvi 348; xii 345 two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1856 at rear of second volume illustrated with two frontispieces a red plate of the Dhurma Rajah's seal and wood engravings in the text. Both volumes are original green cloth and have been neatly recased and rebacked with the original spines which are lacking pieces at the head and tail laid down the original yellow endpapers retained. Volume 1 - the hinge after the frontispiece cracking but absolutely no weakness the fore-edge is a little uneven and in three places it is worn into a slight groove. Volume 2 is better throughout.
