1999014898London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 1999. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book From the pre-historic era to modern times cereal grains have been the most important source of human nutrition and have helped sustain the increasing population and the development of human civilization. In order to meet the food needs of the 21st century food production must be doubled by the year 2025 and nearly tripled by 2050. Such enormous increases in food productivity cannot be brought about by relying entirely on conventional breeding methods especially on less land per capita with poor quality and quantity of water and under rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions. Complementing and supplementing the breeding of major food crops such as the cereals which together account for 66 per cent of the world food supply with molecular breeding and genetic manipulation may well provide a grace period of about 50 years in which to control population growth and achieve sustainable development. In this volume leading world experts on cereal biotechnology describe the production and commercialization of the first generation of transgenic cereals designed to substantially reduce or prevent the enormous losses to cereal productivity caused by competition with weeds and by various pests and pathogens which is an important first step in that direction. 402pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover
1738019442At the West-End of St Paul's London: W. Innys & R. Manby 1738. Third edition with amendments. Small octavo pp xiv 376 illustrated with 19 engraved plates small octavo pp xiv 376 slight signs of age-toning and dustiness but generall quite clean internally the front endpaper detached contemporary full calf poor the covers nearly detached. In Vegetable Staticks Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants although his ideas were not understood at the time so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth i.e. photosynthesis based on Isaac Newtons suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots but also thro the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier the discoverer of oxygen. Hales invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. Modified forms of the pneumatic trough were later used by William Brownrigg Henry Cavendish and Joseph Priestley in their research. Blanche Henrey 779. Full-Leather. Good. W. Innys & R.
