With 15 text illustrations small octavo pages viii 135 iv a contemporary signature on the front endpaper - Thomas Sheppard very clean internally. Pictorial printed boards the corners worn a little slightly rubbed; red cloth spine very slightly worn. 16 pages of the main text are devoted to detailed descriptions of recommended cultivars. Farini then lists cultivar descriptions extracted from the catalogues of specialists such as John Laing & Sons H.J. Jones Sutton's John R. Box and Clibrans. The date of 1896 is confirmed in the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library Catalogue. RARE. Farini Guillermo Antonio 1838-1928 = William Leonard Hunt also known by the stage name The Great Farini was a well-known nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Canadian funambulist entertainment promoter and inventor as well as the first known white man to cross the Kalahari Desert on foot and survive. He also published under the name Guillermo Antonio Farini. He performed many feats on high wires above the Niagara Falls but had to be rescued when attemting to do it on stilts! His life story reads like a Boys Own adventure novel ! Horticulture appears to have come late when he retired to Forest Hill London in 1890. He obviously bred his own Begonias as many bear his name. After 1899 he and his second wife the first had fallen from his shoulders from a high-wire! moved to Germany USA and finally settled in Canada. RARE. Sarah Fitton was an Irish writer who co-authored with her sister Elizabeth the highly popular 'Conversations on Botany'.
