Quarto pp 4 22 224 hand-coloured plates the text and the first plate just slightly foxed otherwise very clean internally all edges gilt and slightly discoloured blue cloth with green lettering and a simple gilt floral motif the spine dull and very slightly worn at top and bottom the spine and the lower cover slightly spotted and slightly unevenly faded. Several internal hinges are a little open but not in any way weak. The plates are simply drawn but quite satisfying. The author was a vicar at Sparsholt near Winchester. RARE. "The first substantial botanical book published in South Africa .and of a remarkably high standard" - Gunn & Codd. Harvey who was already planning his immense Flora Capensis hoped that the 'Genera' would "be sent to resident doctors clergymen etc scattered about the country to excite their idle minds to send specimens in to Cape Town. Ill-health twice returned him to Britain and in 1842 he left South Africa for good. He later completed the first three volumes of Flora Capensis. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. A.S. This volume is the first substantial botanical work published in South Africa. The work provided an introduction to the flora of South Africa and paved the way for Harvey's massive seven volume treatise Flora Capensis. Inscribed by the author to Mr. Macqueen dated 1838. But a folder a the rear contains a frayed advertising flyer for the book a tiny pressed specimen of a tulip species preserved in Myddelton House notepaper four signed letters to Bowles from the author an offprint of an article by Hall from The Journal of Botany and a typed list of tulip species from the Dutch nurseryman Jan Roes.
