2007019894Portland: Timber Press 2007. Well illustrated small quarto pp 224 very clean internally black cloth with the slightest signs of use in a very slightly worn price-clipped dustwrapper. "Dogwood trees and shrubs are unquestionably among the superstars of the ornamental garden. Although cornelian cherry Cornus mas and common dogwood C. sanguinea have been grown in Europe since ancient times it is only since the age of exploration in the 18th and 19th centuries that dogwoods from the New World and Asia have ascended to the high thrones of gardens where their aristocracy remains unchallenged today. Given the huge popularity of dogwoods as garden plants not to mention the hundreds of choice selections and hybrids that have come to prominence in recent decades it is surprising that there has never been a horticultural book on the genus. Paul Cappiello fills this longstanding gap with this definitive treatment for gardeners and enthusiasts. Providing a solid overview of all dogwoods of horticultural merit the author provides more than two hundred stunning photos to help with the daunting tasks of identification and plant selection. He provides helpful details on cultivation combating pests and diseases and the fundamentals of breeding and selection. Based on years of research first-hand observation and interviews with dozens of specialists and nurserypeople "Dogwoods" is an unprecedented guide to the diversity of plants available in nurseries today. Written in engaging and informative prose this book will be treasured by generations of gardeners.". Cloth. Very Good/Very Slightly Worn. Timber Press Hardcover

This volume is number 1 presented to Fernwood Press Pty Ltd signed by the authors Dolf Schumann and Gerhard Kirsten. 'By far the largest of the genera in the South African flora is Erica: with 657 species to its credit. This fact is all the more remarkable when one considers its distribution. People from Europe need no introduction to their heaths which can splash the countryside with pink. Apart from the true heather Calluna the genus Erica contributes only 21 species to the heath flora of Europe. The bulk of the species of Erica are confined to the southern tip of Africa in a concentration that is not equaled by any other plant group in the world. The array of colors and forms of ericas here in the southern Cape province is both remarkable and overwhelming. In the pages of this volume is a photographic record of more than 450 species of one genus a remarkable feat for a flower book. This is the first time that so many species of Erica have been illustrated in a single work' modified from the foreword p. 9. Vlaeberg, South Africa: Fernwood Press, 1992. Limited edition. hardcover

20041016Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh 2004. Fine/Fine. Hard covers dust jacket Fine in fine d.w. A "new type of flora" covering both the systematic and ethnological aspects of the Socotran flora Soqotran if you must. Designed some might say over-designed by Diccon Alexander and with ingenious fully-illustrated tabular keys this book is a mine of scholarship by Miranda Morris and Tony Miller. Colour plates from p. 233 to 280 are not up to the standard of reproduction achieved elsewhere in the text though anyone familiar with Migahid and Hammouda's flora of Saudi Arabia will not be disappointed. Per head of population Socotra must have the highest ratio of Plant Species to Humans of any island of comparable size in the world as well as one of the highest rates of endemism. This book deserves to be owned by anyone interested in owning a uniquely detailed account of one of the world's most bizarre and fascinating floras. Book is rather heavy: please ask for a transport quotation when ordering. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh hardcover
