Alors professeur d'agriculture à Venise et surintendant de l'agriculture et le commerce avec le Levant., l’auteur passa à Paris, puis à Naples où il devint directeur de la statistique (1814-22), poste dont il fut démis pour ses opinions libérales. Walker (1881-1946) was the New York City politician known as Jimmy Walker. He entered politics after graduating from New York Law School, becoming a member of the Assembly (1909) and then of the State Senate (1914). Backed by Gov. Alfred E. Smith and Tammany Hall, he was elected mayor of New York, and served from 1925 to 1932. A popular figure known for his charm and wit but particularly for his enthusiastic participation in the high life typical of the era, he made improvements in sanitation, hospitals, and subways. He resigned in 1932 after being charged with corruption. Hardbound. Excellent twentieth century study of New York State wild flowers, with an interesting association to a colorful politician. The author/editor, Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954) was the most important American botanist and horticulturist of his time. He graduated from the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1882. At Cornell University he was professor of horticulture (1888-1903) and dean of the Agricultural college and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1903-1913). Through numerous writings, and as chairman of President Theodore Roosevelt's Commission on Country Life (1908), he worked for the improvement of rural life. Bailey was influential in establishing horticulture as a respected science. He wrote many standard works on botany and horticulture. This is his most widely known work. Arthur George Tansley (1871-1955), English botanist, a pioneer in the science of plant ecology. He coordinated a large project to map the vegetation of the British Isles. In this work Tansley showed how vegetation is affected by soil, climate, the presence of wild and domesticated animals, previous land management, and contemporary human activities. He also reviewed all known accounts of British flora and then linked the two themes, thereby demonstrating which factors are important in influencing the various types of vegetation.
