The author edited the Encyclopedia of Gardening in 1822 and founded the Gardener's Magazine in 1826. This Second Edition was printed from the same type used for the first edition - Gaskell. First Editions of William Mason, 14n. William Mason (1725-1797) was an English poet, editor and gardener. Born in Hull, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge. After his ordination in 1754 he held a number of posts in the church. The English Garden is especially interesting as it uses famous English authors to illustrate his ideas of garden practice. The author/editor, Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954) was the most important American botanist and horticulturist of his time. He graduated from the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1882. At Cornell University he was professor of horticulture (1888-1903) and dean of the Agricultural college and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1903-1913). Through numerous writings, and as chairman of President Theodore Roosevelt's Commission on Country Life (1908), he worked for the improvement of rural life.
