Ouvrage illustre a l'usage de la jeunesse'. In fact a pretty comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge of prehistoric life with Bayard's illustrations sometimes offering a sort of neo-classical take of such topics as stone tool making hunting and gardening. The t.p. gives number of ills. as 256 but a list at end gives 296 so 256 presumably an unadjusted hangover from previous editions. Unclear how much this was revised from previous editions. Scarce in UK and this edition apparently scarce everywhere though earlier ones widely distributed. This work on the ocean was written by Louis Figuier. Figuier was a French scientist and writer with this work being translated from the original French. The work provides a description of the ocean marine animals and the way humans work and live off the ocean including an overview of the use of sea salts and the fishing industry. Undated. Dated by a copy held at the British Library. In a full calf prize binding for 'Boston Grammar School'. Externally very smart with marks to the boards slight rubbing to the spine joints and extremities and light fading to the spine. Missing front free endpaper with the odd minor mark to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound with bright pages with light spotting throughout heavier to the front and rear. Contains a frontispiece and all other thirty-three plates illustrated by Édouard Riou who illustrated the novels of Jules Verne. Collated complete.Contains publisher's original advertisements at the end of the book.Exploring Earth's pre-historic origins Figuier investigates how the Earth has reached its present state delving into fossils geology chemistry and pre-historical animals like the mammoth. During the period of global colonialism the French popular writer and scientist Louis Figuier outlines five races of man: white yellow black brown and red and describes manners customs and usages of varied peoples around the world. He believed humanity arose in central asia and the varied races emerged over time due to variations of climate sun food and manners and the work reflects his era's popular view of ethnology and physical anthropology. This copy was part of the research library of John G. Spenzer MD with his custom bookplate featuring a skull with a wreath of laurels atop a book bearing the inscription Literae mors immortalitas. Spenzer was a savant and a pioneer forensics expert trained in Europe known as "Cleveland's Sherlock."
