Louis Figuier 1819 - 1894 was a French scientist writer and professor of chemistry at L'Ecole de pharmacie of Montpellier. Editor P. Martin Duncan 1821 - 1891; F.R.S. from 1868 was a distinguished naturalist who edited Cassell's Natural History 1876-82. To Figuier's study Duncan made some corrections and notice of the Thysanoptera Thrips cerealium plus researches on the "evolution" of Stylops of the Strepsiptera a flying parasite which attacked the larvae of bees and wasps. This work on the ocean was written by Louis Figuier. Figuier was a French scientist and writer with this work being translated from the original French. The work provides a description of the ocean marine animals and the way humans work and live off the ocean including an overview of the use of sea salts and the fishing industry. Undated. Dated by a copy held at the British Library. In a full calf prize binding for 'Boston Grammar School'. Externally very smart with marks to the boards slight rubbing to the spine joints and extremities and light fading to the spine. Missing front free endpaper with the odd minor mark to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound with bright pages with light spotting throughout heavier to the front and rear.
