Ouvrage illustre a l'usage de la jeunesse'. In fact a pretty comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge of prehistoric life with Bayard's illustrations sometimes offering a sort of neo-classical take of such topics as stone tool making hunting and gardening. The t.p. gives number of ills. as 256 but a list at end gives 296 so 256 presumably an unadjusted hangover from previous editions. Unclear how much this was revised from previous editions. Scarce in UK and this edition apparently scarce everywhere though earlier ones widely distributed.
