1925185029Calcutta: Government of India Press 1925. The ground enormously favoured the defence First edition of this detailed campaign history issued for official use only and complete as a two-part set. Nine sets are held institutionally but we have traced only a standalone copy of Part II in recent commerce. Comprehensive in scope the work was compiled for officers studying military strategy and tactics and was intended to be read alongside the published volumes of Brigadier-General F. J. Moberly's History of the Great War: The Campaign in Mesopotamia 1914-1918. "Where on point of fact the story is at variance with the version given in the official history it has been allowed to stand unaltered nor have the criticisms been changed in any way" introduction. The contents grew out of a 1923 tour of the Mesopotamian battlefields by personnel from the Staff College Quetta and several chapters were contributed by the military strategist and historian Major General Sir Wilkinson Dent Bird. Chapter XXV offers insightful reflections on the affect of terrain and geography on the prosecution of the war. This point is also stressed by plates reproducing aerial battlefield photographs that were taken specially by the RAF. The table of contents for Part II calls for 26 maps but the 26th "Explanation of the method of giving map co-ordinates" was likely either never issued or only issued with a few copies. It is not included in the set held in the India Office records at the British Library nor in the other copy traced in commerce. Our copy similarly has only 25. Sets are recorded at the British Library Imperial War Museum King's College London the London Library Texas A&M SUNY Potsdam Stellenbosch Defence Science and Technology Group Australia and UNSW Canberra Academy the map volume incomplete. WorldCat also lists a holding at Calgary but this seemingly includes Part I only. 2 vols octavo. 1940170773London: British High Command in the East c.1940-43. Greetings and Peace be upon you A rare chit for RAF pilots to carry during the North Africa Campaign 1940-3 in case of being lost or captured. Written for the benefit of British personnel in the field the focus is simple and concise. The first paragraph in English and Arabic presents a simple greeting asking for hospitality. The following gives points of conduct such as "remove footwear before entering their tents" and "do not expect breakfast if you sleep the night. Arabs will give you a mid-day or evening meal". A word list includes translations of "friend" "food" "tired" and "enemy". The document was colloquially known as a "goolie chit" a "throwback from an earlier war when Royal Flying Corps pilots in India and Mesopotamia needed security in the form of a document that promised a reward to anyone who would bring a British aviator back to British lines. It was so called because local tribesmen in the area were said to turn over aviators to the women who castrated them for use as servants" Feast. We have encountered two other issues: one slightly simplified British issue and an American issue carried by all pilots and crewmen of the Twelfth Air Force with a message from President Roosevelt instead of the British High Command in the East. Quarto single-sheet 244 x 173 mm text in Arabic and English on recto only edge-mounted on thick black card within white card mount all on laminate board presented in dark oak frame with conservation acrylic glazing 353 x 280 mm. Original tan cloth map-case with original printed label to cover. 25 of 26 folding maps sketches etc. as always lacking the "Explanation of the Method of giving Map Co-ordinates adopted in Chapters XIII and XX". An excellent set of maps documenting the battlefields of the Mesopotamian Campaign of WWI: "In the Autumn of 1923 a tour of the Mesopotamian battlefields was undertaken by the instructors and students of the Staff College Quetta and the course of the campaign and the principal operations were studied on the spot" Introduction Part I not present. Printed at the Survey of India Offices Dehradun the maps cover the major sites of the conflict. Maps of note include a simplified version of the sought-after "Lower Mesopotamia" War Office map an elegant map of the Battle of Ctesiphon and a detailed map of Sheikh Saad and Kut-Al-Amara which includes an interesting note on the burgeoning cartography of the area: "The first map with any pretensions to accuracy was not produced till the summer of 1916". Designated "For Official Use Only" this study is uncommon. There are no print-run details given in the text volume but the markings on the maps suggest that there may have been 1000 copies produced. LibraryHub locates three copies at King's College London the London Library and the British Library. WorldCat adds seven more with three in North America three in Australia and one in South Africa.Without the text volume Part I and lacking 1 maps as usual. 1915138323Istanbul: Erkan- Harbiye-i Umumiye Matbaas 1915. Grasping Gallipoli A rare example untraced institutionally of Ottoman military cartography conveying information on physical geography anchorages and the layout of key towns for the purposes of defensive planning. Compared to most Ottoman maps this offered the granular perspective necessary to mount an effective and ultimately successful operational defence of the peninsula and it was in all likelihood the most detailed map available to von Sanders and senior Ottoman commanders at the start of the campaign. Areas of the peninsula including the north-eastern and south-western fringes are shown with much gentler elevations and gradients than was actually the case. It is unclear whether copies fell into enemy hands but general misconceptions over the topography of the peninsula proved the undoing of much of the Allied advance during 1915. While most of the northern tip of the Ottoman empire is unfilled the map identifies features relevant to the ferrying of troops across the Dardanelles including coastal settlements rivers and landing sites. Colour lithograph 560 x 790 mm in 16 sections and mounted upon linen as issued folding away to 42 x 200 mm. Contemporary colour crayon annotations on verso. Light foxing along folds a few sections slightly lifting at corners occasional staining: a very good example. unknown
1919ABC_47443Istanbul: Matbaa-yi Orhaniye 1919. Original publisher's orange printed paper wrappers. 8vo ca. 18.5 x 12.5 cm. With the Turkish text printed using Arabic script. First and only edition of a report about the Sinai and Palestine campaign 1915-1918 in Ottoman Turkish translation. This second half of this campaign was led by General Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby 1st Viscount Allenby 1861-1936. He commanded the Egyptian Expeditionary Force EEF then part of the British army against the Ottoman Empire in the conquest of Palestine in 1917-1918. The EEF succeeded in capturing Beersheba Jaffa and Jerusalem in late 1917 as well as the Jordan valley and Northern Palestine in 1918. The present work is a translation of Allenby's reports which cover the period between December 1917 when the British entered Jerusalem and September 1918 when General Allenby started a new campaign resulting in the capture of Damascus and Aleppo. The report begins with operations to make Jaffa and Jerusalem safe against Turkish counterattacks and continues with Allenby's succesful attacks on Jericho the Jordan Valley and As-Salt. The EEF won numerous other battles in the region before the Armistice of Mudros ended the campaign in October 1918. Allenby then became the High Commisioner in Egypt and Sudan from 1919-1925.With an inscription on the title page and on the back wrapper. With a water stain on the head margin throughout including the wrappers the spine is somewhat torn but the wrappers are still connected. 1917184984London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1917. Simla censured First edition. This report into the disastrous advance on Baghdad and the Siege of Kut heavily criticized Simla and the "confident optimism" of General Sir John Nixon p. 111. Its findings overhauled the prosecution of the Mesopotamian Campaign which became the purview of the War Office and experienced Western Front generals such as Stanley Maude. Parliamentary approval for an investigation into the Mesopotamia fiasco was granted by the Special Commissions Dardanelles and Mesopotamia Act of 1916 and Lord George Hamilton a former Secretary of State for India and First Lord of the Admiralty chaired the wide-ranging enquiry. The commission met over 60 times interviewed dozens of witnesses and trawled documentary evidence and witness statements. The final verdict laid the blame principally on Nixon and the inadequacies of the Government of India and the Indian Army: "In consequence of such want of touch the Military Authorities at Simla did not appreciate the difficulties of campaigning in Mesopotamia and from such lack of knowledge failed to make sufficient provision for surmounting the difficulties and drawbacks" p. 111. Original printed gray wrappers 8vo xiv 1 16-53 pages. 23 cm. <br> English translation of the Jewish Response to the First Anti-Shechitah Campaign in America responding with an explanation of the necessity for Jews to maintain the laws of ritual slaughter.<br> Aaron Zebi Friedman 1822-76 served as shochet or ritual slaughterer in his native Poland before immigrating to New York in 1848 where he found employment in one of the city’s largest kosher slaughterhouses.<br> In 1866 the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals launched the first anti-Shehitah campaign in America. The president of the Society Henry Bergh dispatched a letter to the proprietor of a kosher abattoir in New York accusing him of engaging in "barbarous revolting and wicked" practices–the letter is reproduced in full in this work. Bergh further called on him to desist from violating the laws of New York and of God by "mangling and torturing his creatures."<br> Interestingly among the members listed in the letterhead of Bergh’s letter were August Belmont the Rothschilds' representative in America and Charles P. Daly a chief justice of New York.<br> In 1875 Aaron Zebi Friedman renowned for his piety composed a sharp rejoinder entitled Tub Taam to refute Bergh's accusations. He not only succeeded in silencing Bergh but even in convincing him: In 1885 Bergh defended shechitah against charges of cruelty leveled by the Philadelphia branch of his Society. Goldman 1092; JE Vol. V p. 518.<br> Among those who supported the Jewish position on Shechitah in the struggle against the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was President Ulysses S. Grant. According to Joakim Isaacs Grant "was moved by this English translation.to eat only ritually slaughtered meat in the latter part of his life" See J. 1918185020Basra: Base Isolation Hospital 7 January 1918. A medical logbook Army Book 27A for the Base Isolation Hospital in Basra recording the names and afflictions of over 250 Indian Persian Kurd Arab Chinese Turkish African and Mauritian participants in the Mesopotamian Campaign. A search of the National Archives returns only four documents related to this hospital none of them medical records. In the aftermath of the capture of Baghdad in March 1917 a vast network of hospitals was set up from the capital down to Basra treating both soldiers of the British and Indian armies and Turkish prisoners. "During 1918 the principal hospital areas on the lines of communication were Baghdad Kut Amara and Basra. Special dental ophthalmological and other departments such as bathing establishments were instituted and excellently organized. All the hospitals were made as perfect as possible" MacPherson & Mitchell p. 355. Basra itself contained approximately 14 hospitals including Base Isolation Hospital. This medical logbook notes the race age rank name and role of each of the 250 people admitted in 1918. Some of the afflictions include abscesses tachycardia malaria influenza sepsis and scurvy. The majority of soldiers survived their stays although the dates of death of those who did not are also recorded. Octavo. Printed tables throughout 26 pp. filled in with manuscript 52 pp. blank. Original pink paper wrappers red cloth backstrip string-stitched and glued into wrappers as issued paper label on front wrapper annotated in manuscript fore-edge flap with pink silk bookmarker at rear. Contemporary signature of G. A. Harrison on the front wrapper. Heavily sunned wrappers a little soiled creased and nicked at edges paper label lifting at one edge but secure contents slightly toned and occasionally foxed dust-soiling in gutters: a very good example. The interior pages are in fine condition This RKO Radio Pictures campaign book sent to theater owners to encourage them to show RKO movies. The book includes 54 pages with one and two-page spreads on RKO's upcoming movies and their best stars. Some of the movies and stars promoted include "Glamour" "Miracle City" "Exposed" "Frontier" "The Dove" Dolores Del Rio "The Slander Girl" Rex Beach Irene Dunne Lily Damita Wheeler & Woolsey and much more! Note that many of the pages have signed artwork by many different quite talented artists including Armand Seguso Fredric C. Madan Frank Bensing Patterson Rico and most of these artists have several different pieces in the book. Note that because RKO at this time did not have the biggest name stars they relied on movies with very lurid and sensational material and they created images for this campaign book that are both extremely colorful and often downright sexy! This is really one of the absolute nicest studio campaign books in terms of artwork that was created during the Golde Age of Hollywood. Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners it appears that very few examples have survived. We have seen film campaign books and related material for many years and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies. Also note that as was often the case with these campaign books some of the movies advertised were either never made had their titles changed before they were released or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book. SUPER WORLD WAR II NORTH AFRICA ROYAL AIR FORCE HANDWRITTEN MEMOIR: "This is an exercise book" which it is stated in the first line of the first entry: 22/2/43 9 pages; "I bought this book yesterday and am just taking a few spare moments to jot down some of the happenings and events of the last few months. This book is not intended to be a diary as such as I have found that a day to day record of events becomes monotonous; but rather a medium that permits me to express myself on paper at thise inevitable times in the service when due to ones surroundings and situation there is nothing else to do. I shall also include such events as seem worthy of record and which I may like to preserve for the future in a clear cut form than memory alone provides. So I am now on the threshold of Operational Flying there should be much of interest and amusement which will be of interest and amusement." He then summarizes his Air Force Career and details what I assume is the "happenings of the last few months" as detailed at the beginning of this entry. This includes Scotland and Durban South Africa and Egypt. The rest of the journal is concerned with life and training in Africa and finishes abruptly on 21st July 1943. One week after he makes his first Operational flight over the Mediterranean. 19765208Manchester: CHE 1976-77 1976. A rare complete set of all five issues of the short-lived but important and influential magazine published by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality. Each issue was 12 pages 295x210mm stapled at the spine although the last issue appears not to have been stapled. On the front covers are cartoons or photographs and there are few in the way of illustrations in the magazine. It was a serious affair highly political and firmly activist in its intent. As the first issue makes clear "our aim is to provoke thought and discussion and we shall encourage criticism of the gay movement". The editors two men and two women "believe in gay liberation and non-sexism - which is why you won't find pin-up pictures or advertisements for hard-core pornography". OUT was a campaigning journal at a critical moment for the gay movement. The magazine covers political developments moving reports from people whose lives were helped by the CHE an interview with Christopher Isherwood news of local organisations details about rallies and conferences lots of letters book reviews and in the first two issues a rather wonderful column entitled "Outsiders. Why I won't join the CHE" which shows a refreshing contrariness. Indeed OUT which is scarce is an attractively serious but off-beat magazine and it is a pity it seemed to last for only five issues. A near-complete set of broadsides 3 lacking trumpeting the accomplishments of FDR in his first term and warning against the regressive social and fiscal policies of the Republicans. Each broadside on a different theme: Housing; the WPA; Trade Policy; Taxes; Farm Relief etc. The broadsides were issued in 1938 probably for the mid-term elections of that year. Foster February 25 1881–September 1 1961 was a radical American labor organizer and Communist politician whose career included serving as General Secretary of the Communist Party USA from 1945 to 1957. He was previously a member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World leading the drive to organize the packinghouse industry during WWI and the steel strike of 1919. Foster began to lose power within the Party due to his imprisonment during the Party's convention in 1930 and his continuing differences with others over trade union policies. Foster was nominated for president yet again in 1932 but he suffered a heart attack on the campaign trail and was forced to step down as leader of the party in favor of Earl Browder. James W. “Jim†Ford December 22 1893 – 1957 was an activist a politician and the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Communist Party USA in the years 1932 1936 and 1940. Ford worked as a party organizer for the CPUSA in New York City. He was the first African American to run on a U.S. presidential ticket 1932 in the 20th century. In 1932 the CPUSA nominated Ford as its candidate for Vice President of the United States; this increased his national recognition. The placing of a Black man near the top of the Communist ticket was symbolic of the party's self-declared commitment to racial equality and its commitment to advance Blacks to its own leadership. William Z. Foster had to drop out of the 1932 Presidential campaign due to health issues so most of the surviving Communist Party of the United States 1932 political material features Earl Browder making this small pamphlet exceedingly rare. The Communist Party USA officially the Communist Party of the United States of America CPUSA is a communist party in the United States established in 1919 after a split in the Socialist Party of America following the Russian Revolution. The history of the CPUSA is closely related to the American labor movement and communist parties worldwide. Initially operating underground due to the Palmer Raids starting in the First Red Scare the party was influential in American politics in the first half of the 20th century and played a prominent role in the labor movement from the 1920s through the 1940s becoming known for opposing racism and racial segregation after sponsoring the defense for the Scottsboro Boys in 1931. Its membership increased during the Great Depression and they played a key role in the Congress of Industrial Organizations. The CPUSA subsequently declined due to events such as World War II the beginning of the Cold War the second Red Scare and the influence of McCarthyism. Its support for the Soviet Union increasingly alienated it from the rest of the left in the United States in the 1960s. The CPUSA received significant funding from the Soviet Union and crafted its public positions to match those of Moscow. The CPUSA also used a covert apparatus to assist the Soviets with their intelligence activities in the United States and utilized a network of front organizations to shape public opinion. The CPUSA opposed glasnost and perestroika in the Soviet Union and as a result major funding from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ended in 1989. Workers Library Publishers paperback
1935201293<p>San Francisco 1935. Very Good.</p><p>The idea for the Golden Gate International Exposition also known as the 1939 World's Fair was first formulated in 1933. In 1934 two architects William Peyton Day and George W. Kelham who was instrumental in the PPIE were tasked with evaluating various sites in and around the city.</p><p>By the end of 1934 that choice had narrowed to revamping the Presidio or to building an artificial island on the shoals of the Yerba Buena islands. A push by promoters of a mainland site was voted down in April 1935. As important a decision as this was there seems to be very little documentation on the campaign for a mainland site.</p><p>The poster lists 22 practical reasons for a mainland fair appealing primarily to reasons that would have a direct effect on residents of San Francisco. It failed however to inspire voters in the way that building "Treasure Island" did. By this time also Treasure Island had plans in the making for future use as an airport and other practical reasons of its own to exist.</p><p>Printed by the Sunset Courier. In 1925 the Courier was linked to an anti-union movement. In 1932 the Courier ran with the anti-Japanese headline "Orientals Are Invading Sunset District." In 1933 the Courier questioned the distribution of public funds to Jewish organizations. The relation of the Courier to the campaign is not known by me and they may have only offered the lowest printing rates.</p><p>Printed on newsprint single-sided with red ruled border and red "BECAUSE" repeated. Very Good condition 23" x 17" creased from folds minor edgewear.</p>
