1917184984London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1917. Simla censured First edition. This report into the disastrous advance on Baghdad and the Siege of Kut heavily criticized Simla and the "confident optimism" of General Sir John Nixon p. 111. Its findings overhauled the prosecution of the Mesopotamian Campaign which became the purview of the War Office and experienced Western Front generals such as Stanley Maude. Parliamentary approval for an investigation into the Mesopotamia fiasco was granted by the Special Commissions Dardanelles and Mesopotamia Act of 1916 and Lord George Hamilton a former Secretary of State for India and First Lord of the Admiralty chaired the wide-ranging enquiry. The commission met over 60 times interviewed dozens of witnesses and trawled documentary evidence and witness statements. The final verdict laid the blame principally on Nixon and the inadequacies of the Government of India and the Indian Army: "In consequence of such want of touch the Military Authorities at Simla did not appreciate the difficulties of campaigning in Mesopotamia and from such lack of knowledge failed to make sufficient provision for surmounting the difficulties and drawbacks" p. 111. Quarto. Map folding chart illustrations labelled annexures II and III Annexure I not issued. Original blue wrappers spine and covers printed in black. Ex-London County Council Library with its annotated ink stamp on front cover. Small loss at foot of spine occasional cockling and spotting internally 90 mm stub tear: very good. unknown
201683759New York City : The Donald J. Trump for President Campaign 2016. Presumed one of a limited number of original media request tickets. Laminated card/ticket. As new. Approximately 7.375 inches by 4.25 inches. Printed on only one side. The right side has a bar code and number at the top. Below is a picture of Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence together. Below that are two images one is of the original Trump Pence logo and the other is one of both Trump and Pence standing behind the original logo. As Donald Trump announced his new running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence his campaign unveiled a new logo that immediately became the object of ridicule on social media and inspired oh-so-many sexually suggestive responses. The new Trump-Pence logo enmeshes the candidates' initials — TP — with the American flag sparking immediate references to toilet paper and other bathroom wit. As the day continued T The designers might have anticipated this before releasing into the wild a logo with one letter penetrating another. "I can see this being sold to them as a visual representation of two people working hand-in-hand" said Ethan Imboden vice president of creative at Frog Design. "My guess is that was the intention to represent them more in the form of a monogram bringing together a T and P as a partnership." Trump's campaign unveiled a modified version of its Trump-Pence logo after the original graphic drew a lot of unintended attention. During Trump's official introduction of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate the campaign adorned a fundraising email with a simple "TRUMP" atop a "PENCE". Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller told CNN "We have a number of logos. The final one won't be unveiled until the convention." Over at the New York Hilton Midtown 1335 Ave of the Americas only a few blocks from his Trump Tower the Donald J. Trump Victory Party opened its doors at 6:30 p.m. Trump and running mate Mike Pence are hosting an invite-only gathering for friends and supporters of the campaign a divergence to the GOP candidate's usually large rallies. Trump admitted on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning that he is "a little superstitious" something a Washington Post source cited as the reason behind the low-key event. Make America Great Again hats and pins encased in glass cases bookended the stage inside the Hilton ballroom which was decorated with country and state flags. The loudest and most sustained cheer of the night erupts when the event's cable network of choice Fox News announced Ohio for Trump. Random "USA! USA" cheers erupt intermittently. The crowd keeps cheering "President Trump!" as NYPD counterterrorism bureau cops increase their presence. MAGA hats are being handed out. from suitcases. It became a long night for both campaigns. A medical logbook Army Book 27A for the Base Isolation Hospital in Basra recording the names and afflictions of over 250 Indian Persian Kurd Arab Chinese Turkish African and Mauritian participants in the Mesopotamian Campaign. In the aftermath of the capture of Baghdad in March 1917 a vast network of hospitals was set up from the capital down to Basra treating both soldiers of the British and Indian armies and Turkish prisoners. "During 1918 the principal hospital areas on the lines of communication were Baghdad Kut Amara and Basra. Special dental ophthalmological and other departments such as bathing establishments were instituted and excellently organized. All the hospitals were made as perfect as possible" MacPherson & Mitchell p. 355. Basra itself contained approximately 14 hospitals including Base Isolation Hospital. This medical logbook notes the race age rank name and role of each of the 250 people admitted in 1918. Some of the afflictions include abscesses tachycardia malaria influenza sepsis and scurvy. The majority of soldiers survived their stays although the dates of death of those who did not are also recorded. Octavo. Printed tables throughout 26 pp. filled in with manuscript 52 pp. blank. 1897170872Dehra Dún India: Surveyor General of India 1897. One of the greatest difficulties felt at the outset of the Tirah Campaign was the lack of topographical information Rare map issued on the eve of the Tirah Campaign; 750 copies were printed at the Office of the Trigonometrical Branch Survey of India in August 1897 two months before the outbreak of hostilities. Printed on linen and clearly intended for use in the field attrition rates would have been high: we have traced no copies among institutional libraries. In October 1897 one of the largest operations on the North-West Frontier involving 35000 troops under Lieutenant-General Sir William Lockhart was launched against the Afridi and Orakzai in the Tirah. "The two tribes had attacked several forts but also captured posts in the Khyber Pass which bordered the north of their territory. As Lockhart's main force crossed the Samana Mountains it found its route blocked by 12000 tribesmen occupying a steep ridge at Dargai" National Army Museum. Lockhart's troops suffered heavy casualties in the open ground in front of the Afridi positions but in a famous action the heights were stormed by the 1st Gordon Highlanders and 1st/2nd Gurkhas to the sound of Piper George Findlater's bagpipes. Lockhart's force then fought its way into Tirah and from its fortified camp at Maidan columns fanned out to pacify the surrounding valleys and regain control of the Khyber Pass. The expedition lasted until January 1898. As Captain H. L. Nevill points out in Campaigns on the North-West Frontier 1911 "one of the greatest difficulties felt at the outset of the Tirah Campaign was the lack of topographical information Many of the parts about to be invaded had never been visited by Europeans". An 1897 map entitled Rough Map of Tirah and Surrounding Country scale 1 inch = 2 miles measuring 930 x 60 mm issued at Simla by the Intelligence Branch is known only by the copy at the British Library. Photozincographed map printed on linen unfolded 740 x 1020 mm; folded 260 x 200 mm; scale 1 inch = 2 miles. Housed in a custom green cloth flap case gilt-lettered spine. Creased where folded peripheral toning some soiling on verso yet this remains in very good condition. hardcover

193116792JLos Angeles: RKO Radio Pictures 1931. First Edition. Original RKO Radio Pictures 1931-32 Campaign Book measures 11" x 14" 28 x 36 cm; 54 pages. There are smudges and stains on to the front cover and on the completely blank back cover and there are small tears and chipping around the edges of both covers. The interior pages are in fine condition This RKO Radio Pictures campaign book sent to theater owners to encourage them to show RKO movies. The book includes 54 pages with one and two-page spreads on RKO's upcoming movies and their best stars. Some of the movies and stars promoted include "Glamour" "Miracle City" "Exposed" "Frontier" "The Dove" Dolores Del Rio "The Slander Girl" Rex Beach Irene Dunne Lily Damita Wheeler & Woolsey and much more! Note that many of the pages have signed artwork by many different quite talented artists including Armand Seguso Fredric C. Madan Frank Bensing Patterson Rico and most of these artists have several different pieces in the book. Note that because RKO at this time did not have the biggest name stars they relied on movies with very lurid and sensational material and they created images for this campaign book that are both extremely colorful and often downright sexy! This is really one of the absolute nicest studio campaign books in terms of artwork that was created during the Golde Age of Hollywood. Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners it appears that very few examples have survived. We have seen film campaign books and related material for many years and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies. Also note that as was often the case with these campaign books some of the movies advertised were either never made had their titles changed before they were released or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book. This book is not intended to be a diary as such as I have found that a day to day record of events becomes monotonous; but rather a medium that permits me to express myself on paper at thise inevitable times in the service when due to ones surroundings and situation there is nothing else to do. I shall also include such events as seem worthy of record and which I may like to preserve for the future in a clear cut form than memory alone provides. So I am now on the threshold of Operational Flying there should be much of interest and amusement which will be of interest and amusement." 19765208Manchester: CHE 1976-77 1976. A rare complete set of all five issues of the short-lived but important and influential magazine published by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality. Each issue was 12 pages 295x210mm stapled at the spine although the last issue appears not to have been stapled. On the front covers are cartoons or photographs and there are few in the way of illustrations in the magazine. It was a serious affair highly political and firmly activist in its intent. As the first issue makes clear "our aim is to provoke thought and discussion and we shall encourage criticism of the gay movement". The editors two men and two women "believe in gay liberation and non-sexism - which is why you won't find pin-up pictures or advertisements for hard-core pornography". OUT was a campaigning journal at a critical moment for the gay movement. The magazine covers political developments moving reports from people whose lives were helped by the CHE an interview with Christopher Isherwood news of local organisations details about rallies and conferences lots of letters book reviews and in the first two issues a rather wonderful column entitled "Outsiders. Why I won't join the CHE" which shows a refreshing contrariness. Indeed OUT which is scarce is an attractively serious but off-beat magazine and it is a pity it seemed to last for only five issues.
