I conflitti in questa regione si sono susseguiti per decenni e hanno visto la partecipazione di molti popoli, tra cui curdi, turchi, armeni, arabi e gli stessi crociati. Nicholas Morton ricrea questo mondo, raccontando in che modo ogni fazione abbia cercato di promuovere le proprie rivendicazioni con ogni mezzo possibile, adattando l'armamentario della guerra per meglio rispondere alle minacce poste dai gruppi rivali.
