Prima rara edizione di questa importante opera del noto storiografo, giurista e prelato beneventano, Giovanni de Nicastro (1659 – 1738), fu Arcidiacono “della metropolitana di Benevento” e vescovo di Claudopoli. Personaggio dai numerosi interessi e dalla grande cultura, Giovani fu particolarmente devoto di San Gennaro, divenendo anche una delle fonti del frate Carmelitano Scal zo Girolamo Maria di S. Anna, per le notizie riguardanti la presenza di reliquie del santo presenti a Benevento che il frate avrebbe, poi, utilizzate per la sua 67. biografia della vita e dei miracoli di San Gennaro edita a Napoli nel 1733. L’opera qui presentata è un’importante fonte della storia di Benevento che ripercorre le biografie dei più importanti personaggi della città descrivendone gesta e opere, varie anche inedite ed andate oggi disperse.
