Oggi siamo generalmente portati a pensare a quest'era come a un periodo di conflitto religioso, eppure questa concezione semplifica enormemente la storia di una regione complessa, in cui la violenza poteva scaturire per molteplici ragioni, non necessariamente riconducibili alla religione, e dove le persone di fedi diverse potevano facilmente trovarsi a combattere fianco a fianco per ragioni di puro interesse. Attraverso una narrazione accurata e approfondita, Morton porta il lettore al cuore di questi conflitti e confuta l'idea, comunemente diffusa, che identifica le crociate con la lotta "cristiani contro musulmani".

Amid the chaos of war, Ottoman War Minister Enver Pasha paid particular attention to graves and ordered the generals to respect them, and even directly told soldiers to take care of them. Upon the request of English, French and Austrian families, the graves of dead soldiers were searched for.
