A collection of black and white ink sketches tied together with a handmade paper tie. 33 x 47cm. <br>3. An ink drawing of a bonsai plum tree 43 x 47cm <br>4. 山道の図面. Sandō no zumen. 48 x 65.3cm <br>5. 庭園の風景 Teien no fūkei. Scroll illustrated with black and white ink drawings. 54.8 x 389.5cm <br> <br>Some browning and staining but largely the sheets are clean some small tears with loss at edges. A delightful collection. This evocative and varied collection offers insight into Japanese garden design and botanical study during the late Edo period. The delicate hand-coloured scroll of plum blossoms and maples demonstrates both aesthetic sensitivity and horticultural interest with varieties carefully named. The bamboo studies are nice exercises in brush technique while the panoramic scroll of a garden landscape stretching nearly four metres offers a rare visual impression of spatial planning and garden flow. Together these pieces present a rich visual archive of traditional Japanese natural aesthetics and artistic practice. A rewarding collection for those interested in Edo-period garden design nihonga painting or botanical representation in Japanese art. . unknown

Occasional mild foxing or cover soil else well-preserved and free of significant wear; Very Good. <br /> <br /> Dialectics was the official organ of Critics Group an alliance of Marxist literary and art critics headed by Puerto Rican literary critic Angel Flores. The group's work in the words of Walter Goldwater "stayed within the Communist Party line." The journal printed new critical essays by American Marxist scholars as well as translations of classic works of Russian criticism by Plekhanov Lenin Marx and others. Issues 3-8 print an ongoing series of bibliographies: "Dialectics and the Sciences;" "Psychology and Marxism;" "Soviet Literature;" etc. Critics Group also issued a series of monographs under the series title "Critics Group Pamphlets." 1840284501840. Fine condition. An exquisite suite of watercolors & pencil sketches possibly created for a friendship album. The floral images are of a floral wreath pink rose sweet pea fuchsia bachelor button white lily pansies geranium tulips red ivy leaves dogwood etc. The floral wreath has the name "Katie" in the center. The four pencil sketches are of pastoral scenes a man herding cattle near a lake a man starting to chop a massive tree down; two men on horseback with sheep riding past someone's' homestead greeting a carriage in the distance; a man walking near a river at sunset or sunrise. Very detailed on small format paper 8 1/2 x 6". Highlighted with gum arabic. <br /> <br /> The paintings are so detailed it is hard to believe they are original paintings. unknown
#[24750]4 tinted lithographed sheets with vases in which 50 different lithographed and cut out coloured flowers could be placed in various arrangements. Pasted on the inside cover is a short introduction with a list of the 50 flowers with the Dutch names. Cont. half linen portfolio with printed title on cover. Edges and covers worn. This curious portfolio was published anonymously by he Arnhem firm of H.A. Tjeenk Willink active between 1850 and 1886. The present edition with the lithographed vases and flowers seems to have been published between 1871 and 1881 the years in which the firm had a lithography office. l B0106 unknown

An album of 24 captioned photographic plates of Jerusalem and Palestine on the back of each is a pressed wild flower arrangement in most cases separated from the plate opposite by a plain tissue guard. 16.5 x 24cm. Unpaginated. In very good condition some toning and creasing to the page edges and corners one with a single short closed tear and old tape repair. To the inside front cover and inner edge of the first photographic plate there are presentation inscriptions in ink "Jerusalem 4th May 1921 / To dear Marjorie / with love from Uncle Jack and Auntie Kitty". The souvenir photo book is in itself unremarkable and reasonably common in commerce the pressed flower arrangements however are quite charming. Contents good and tight original brown-coated end-papers first few pages a little toned and spotted a few neat marginal notes in pencil photographic map over exposed presumably it started life as such. armorial bookplate of the antiquary Charles Francis Wyatt to the front paste-down 2-page and 16-page publisher's catalogues bound in at rear the latter dated January 1863. The twelve McDowall engravings each on separate cards of shiny art paper each 90 x 130 cm and all but the card with the image of the Scott Memorial see below in landscape. The Menzies engraving of Loch Ness in similar style to the others on shiny art paper but slightly larger at 90 x 140 cm and landscape. Delicate items in fair condition with browning to edges but images clear and complete. The engravings on the McDowall cards are as follows. By T. G. Flowers: Heriot's Hospital founded 1628; and 'Assembly Hall Heriots Hospital and Castle'. By G. Grierson: Calton Hill; Dean Bridge. John Johnstone: St John's Episcopal Chapel; Sir Walter Scott's Monument founded 1840 from design by C. M. Kemp and 'Burns' Monument & Arthur's Seat' from design by T. McDowall.
