Front cover has a wonderful diecut wing of the Flair logo. Includes wonderful period ads for tvs cars clothes jewelry beauty products and much more. There is a section with loads of ads from shops all around the US. Among the impressive contents are: Tennessee Williams' short story titled "The Resemblance Between a Violin Case and a Coffin" a story by Angus Wilson an insert with a "Letter to Americans" by Jean Cocteau and an essay by W. H. Auden titled "Jean Cocteau." There is a tipped in reproduction of "Girl with Roses" by Lucien Freud. Lastly there are sections on the Paris house of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and on traveling to Morocco. A very good plus copy in die-cut wrappers with some light soiling and wear. Cover design is a deep red background with a gold wing with the cut out revealing its black shadow; underlying illustration is a dramatic portrait of a red-headed woman in a black evening gown with the caption "The Spirit of Flair: Interpretation by Rene Gruau.<br /> <br /> Booklets attached inside including one by Jean Cocteau.<br /> <br /> This issue has very clean interior pages and includes features by Lucian Freud Jean Cocteau W. H. Auden and Tennessee Williams. Also articles on the Paris house of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor Philip Johnson's Glass House. Illustrations by Rene Gruau cover with cut out and gold wing ads for Hattie Carnegie Schiaparelli etc. 'A fancy bouillabaisse of Vogue Town & Country Holiday etc.' remarked Time Magazine discussing the launch of Fleur Cowles' extravagant and innovative Flair magazine.<br /> <br /> It was the brainchild of Cowles who wished to create a journal with 'flair'. One that covered the best of fashion décor travel art literature humor and entertainment and featured the words and images of the best twentieth century writers and artists.<br /> <br /> It was published by Cowles' husband Gardner Cowles and his brother John but the editorial control rested with Fleur. She insisted on the finest production values and each issue featured cut-outs fold-outs inserts different paper stock and lots of colour. Art direction was by Louis-Marie Eude & then Hershel Bramson. A collection of nine letters from the journalist artist and socialite Fleur Cowles to her friend Dart prominent California patroness of the arts and philanthropist and member of Ronald Reagan's inner circle. Most of the letters are typed on Cowles’ personal stationery SIGNED ‘Devotedly Fleur’ and provide a glimpse of the relationship of the two close friends in 1955 the Darts’ hosted Cowles’ and Tom Meyer's wedding at their Los Angeles home; the only other guest was best man Cary Grant. Also included are two carbon copies of letters from Jane to Fleur.<br /> <br /> The letters several 2 & 3 pages mostly revolve around Cowles’ paintings regarding upcoming solo exhibitions at the Seattle Museum of Art and later at Nieman-Marcus in Dallas but include copious ‘gossip of the day.’ Names dropped include Jimmy and Gloria Stewart Thelma Breech Frances and Edgar Bergen Thomas E.
