19788969North Brookfield MA: Thistle Hill Press 1978. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. Quarto. 24; 8 pp. frontis plate illus. Limited edition number 71 of 500 copies signed by Neal and Eichenberg at the colophon. As issued sewn into printed wrappers with full page wood engraving by Eichenberg serving as a frontispiece. Another similarly printed and sewn booklet with title page and colophon serves as a folder for a loose wood engraving of the frontispiece—this signed and numbered by Eichenberg on the bottom margin; all houses in publisher's slipcase with printed paper labels. Only light rubbing to the slipcase but the contents are nearly fine. A striking engraving portions of which have been employed to decorate the covers of each booklet as well as each colophon. 187012481Paris: Dusacq. Edr. 14 Boulev. De Poissonniere c.1870. Image: 517 by 835mm 20.25 by 32.75 inches. Sheet: 650 by 905mm 25.5 by 35.75 inches. Engraving with aquatint. The sixth and final state of the print "retouched" by Guesnu. Brunel's Hungerford Suspension Bridge has been re-engraved to become the Charing Cross Railway Bridge though some of its suspension cables are still visible. It shows Charing Cross Station Victoria Embankment Albert Embankment St Thomas's Hospital Cannon Street Railway Bridge but not Station and Blackfriars Railway Bridge very sketchily. We are aware of a fifth state without the additions by Guesnu but with the imprint 'Imp. Ch. et Alf. Chardon r. Hautefeuille 30 Paris'. The Bibliothèque Nationale's Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1808 Vol. 1 lists an edition printed in 1857 by Chardon which presumably is the date for this fifth state. Dusacq. Edr. 14 Boulev. Abele; Index -- "Interest in the functional morphology of crustaceans is currently at an all-time high . During the past twenty-five years many crustacean biologists have directed their research toward the study of 'how crustaceans work' and from these investigations we are gaining a new understanding of arthropod functional morphology and embryology. Gaps in our knowledge are being filled and we are moving rapidly toward a sophisticated understanding of external and internal crustacean morphology. Recent technological advances in scanning and transmission electron microscopy together with new preparative methods now allow very close examination of crustacean anatomy. These advances have been accompanied by a change in emphasis in morphological studies. It is no longer sufficient merely to provide a description of the anatomy of a feature. Now one must demonstrate the functions of morphological features or at the least provide sufficient information on which to base an inference. The study of morphology is changing from an observational vocation into an experimental hypothesis-testing science - a radical change for a branch of biology that has had a long and all too venerable history as a purely descriptive one. The papers presented here amply demonstrate this process. First two chapters present schemes for classifying crustacean setae. Setae are ubiquitous structures in crustaceans and the lack of a comprehensive classification system for them has been a significant problem. Both of these studies contribute significantly to our understanding of what constitutes a particular setal type and they will be welcomed by systematists and functional morphologists alike. Ch.3 summarizes from a functional viewpoint our current understanding of the physiological responsiveness of sensory neurons in certain crustacean setae and explores the ultrastructural features of different types of physiologically defined sensory neurons. Grooming of the exoskeleton is an important crustacean behavior. Ch.4 presents evidence that grooming characters can contribute to our understanding of decapod phylogeny."

Balkema hardcover
