Flora Nwapa 1931-1998 was born in Oguta a town in south-eastern Nigeria and studied at the universities of Ibadan and Edinburgh. Her first book marked "the beginning of an Igbo dialogue on gender. Published in 1971 with Chinua Achebe at the helm as Editorial Adviser it has a striking blue and white cover depicting the central district of Lagos. Review copy written on the title page - this copy is probably from the first batch of the finished book sent to reviewers at national newspapers. A rare and collectible book. At the time of listing we are not aware of another copy of this true first edition being offered for sale on the www. It is of legendary scarcity. A collection of stories by "the Mother of Modern African Literature" centered around life for women in Nigeria. From the lower wrap: "Skilfully sic she recaptures in print the frustrations Lagos life holds for our women and naturally places a lot of the blame on men who have proved to be unreliable." According to the Nigerian newspaper The Guardian Nwapa was the first female African novelist to be published in in Britain in English partially financed by a supportive Chinua Achebe who is listed as Editorial Advisor for this title. Her first two were novels published as part of Heinemann's African Writers Series. In 1970 she founded the Tana Press becoming one of Nigeria's first female publishers.
