Library stamps. Volume one with ex libris.Sir George Francis Hampson, 10th Baronet (1860-1936) was an English entomologist. Hampson travelled to India to become a tea-planter in the Nilgiri Hills of the Madras presidency (now Tamil Nadu), where he became interested in moths and butterflies. When he returned to England he worked at the Natural History Museum (London), where he wrote ‘’The Lepidoptera of the Nilgiri District’’ (1891) and several other works. He was promoted to acting assistant keeper in 1901. He then worked on his magnum opus, his 15 volume ‘’Catalogue of the Lepidoptera Phalaenae in the British Museum’’. Complete text (volume 1 same binding but from another set) together with all plate volumes except those to volume 1. The text volumes of this work are not rare, although complete copies are seldom offered. However the beautifully chromolithographed plate volumes are far more difficult to obtain.

Library stamps on verso front cover and one on each title-page.Between 1876 and 1902 the Breton printer Charles Oberthür (1845-1924) wrote and published 21 parts of his Études d'Entomologie. All parts are rare and much sought after for their beautiful illustrations and the many new species described therein. We offer here four parts: 9, 11, 14 and 16. Part 11 has its original front cover (somewhat browned and foxed) and a dedication by Oberthür: ‘’A Monsieur l’Abbé Pichot, affecteux souvenir de l’auteur Charles Oberthür, Rennes, 5 Janvier 1898’’.

The green on spines somewhat discoloured. Some slight scattered foxing, but plates clean. In this set the plates are bound at the end of each volume. Ex library Claude Gouffé.This is Comte Amédée Luis Michel Lepeletier de Saint-Fargau's (1770-1845) main work and was published by Librairie Encyclopédique de Roret as part of the ''Suites à Buffon''. There was a fourth volume published in 1846 which was authored by A. Brullé but is not present in our set, but the work is very rare in any state. This is a good set of the first three volumes of the scarce coloured edition in an attractive period binding.

Some wear on boards and spine portfolio. Volumes 1-2 are the 1851 edition printed on lower quality paper thus these two with some scattered foxing). Library stamps on free end-papers and title-pages, else a good copy.Apparently the volumes were given in 1970 to the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam (which no longer exists) by the Dutch botanist and entomologist Gideon Kruseman (1904-1992). Some of the pencil annotations in the books might be in his hand, or by an earlier owner of this set.Johann Wilhelm Meigen (1764-1845) was a German entomologist specialized in Diptera, and is sometimes called the father of dipterology. In any case the above work is his magnum opus, his chief accomplishment. In all he described 3500 species (mainly diptera).

With numerous black & white illustrations in the text five of these full-page and EIGHT COLOR PLATES depicting a total of 107 insects. Front pastedown with blank engraved award certificate for a county fair exhibition in the 1860s. Sabin 30524. One corner gently bumped gilt lettering on spine a little discolored occasional faint offsetting but A VERY FINE COPY WITH NO SIGNS OF USE and few signs of age.<br/> <br/> Written by a Harvard librarian and leading American entomologist this is an outstanding copy of one of the most important treatises on pest control in agriculture printed in the 19th century. Thaddeus William Harris 1795-1856 trained as a medical doctor but gave up the profession to become librarian at Harvard University where he introduced one of the first card catalogue systems and increased the University's holdings from 30000 to 65000 over the course of his tenure. Though diligent in this work Harris' real passion was for entomology; his spare time was devoted to the study of insects and he eventually acquired nearly 10000 specimens--in its day a collection considered the finest in the United States. Sometimes overshadowed by contemporaries like naturalist Asa Grey who was given a Harvard professorship over Harris and fellow entomologist Thomas Say Harris' work was nonetheless pivotal in the development of the study of insects and he was deemed "the greatest entomologist in the world" by the brilliant zoologist and fellow Harvardian Louis Agassiz. The present work first appeared in a report for the Massachusetts Commission on the Zoological and Botanical Survey in 1841 and printed separately in 1842 under the title "A Treatise on Some of the Insects of New England Which Are Injurious to Vegetation." Eschewing language that was too technical Harris' writing is notable for the straightforward easy to follow descriptions that would have appealed to an audience outside the ivory tower. According to ANB "Harris' reputation rests largely on this work and through its influence he is credited with founding practical or economic entomology emphasizing the control of insect pests in the United States. At the end of the century it still was considered an essential manual for entomologists of the Northeast." This third edition introduces several lovely hand-colored plates enriching the text and offering a distinct advantage over earlier editions. Ours is as clean and attractive a copy as one can hope to find with none of the wear one usually finds on publisher's bindings of this period. William White unknown
