1850014884London: John Murray 1850. New edition. Small square octavo pp xvi 144 4. publisher's catalogue 8 pages with 12 lithographed plates delicately hand-coloured all edges gilt very clean internally a contemporary signature on the front endpaper Charles H. Hingeston 1852 original blind-stamped cloth gilt lettering on upper cover slightly faded a little worn at the corners very neatly re-backed with a modern cloth spine unlettered. Still a very pleasing copy of a work which is difficult to find in good condition. In many ways a ground-breaking work as was much of Mantell's opus. It alerted the Victorians to an aspect of natural history which had previously largely escaped them and was a remarkable precursor to the germ theory. Cloth. Very Good. John Murray Hardcover

1891018104Newtonville Mass.: By the Author: 1891. First published in 1890 this book is the second edition from 1891. "Illustrated with ten hand colored plates in which are given at least two hand-colored figures for each species. In preparing a second edition of this book I have not considered it advisable to make any changes in either the text or plates that appeared in the first edition. The present volume however contains an Appendix in which are given descriptions of one hundred and five species and sub-species of Butterflies that occur in North America east of the Mississippi River. These descriptions are mainly comparative and the text is accompanied by two hand colored plates on whcih are figured some of the species described. It has been my endeavor in this work to present recognizable figures and intelligeble descriptions of the Butterflies whihc occur in new England. The drawings and descriptions of the perfect insects are original but I have been obliged to compile descriptions of the larva and pupa from works of various authors who have written upon the subject." GOOD HARDCOVER ex-library withdrawn hand colored plates are fine no library marking are present on plates the description page for Plate two has separated from the book. Few text pages has some short tears also text description for Plate VIII has partially separated from the binding. Book has been collated and determined to be complete. Hard Cover. In three sections: Las Propiedades de los jesuitas en el distrito de Santiago; Adquisiciones de los jesuitas en las provincias de Chile; Diversas industrias de los jesuitas. Part of the Biblioteca de la Revista de Santiago. Don Diego Barros Arana 1830 - 1907 Chilean historian & investigative writer of Basque origin legislator minister and diplomat; "studied for a legal career but gave up the law to pursue his interests in history and literature. In 1859 the Chilean government exiled him for writing articles critical of the government. While in exile he visited Buenos Aires Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro where he collected historical data and he later did the same in France England and Spain. He was one of the first Latin-American historians to explore the rich Spanish archivessubsequently served as a dean of the humanities faculty at the University of Santiago and as Chilean ambassador to Argentina Uruguay and Brazil. As a historian Barros Arana was more a painstaking investigator and annalist than an interpreter of historical events though his works are somewhat coloured with ideas of Chilean nationalism.
