Small octavo. Pp. iv, 356. Half-title present. Original printed wrappers, spine panel bit frayed. In fine condition. ~ First separate edition. Excellent copy, extremely rare in the original publisher's wrappers, untrimmed and preserved entirely in the original state. First published in 1804 as part of "Eléments d'idéologie", the work was titled "Traité de la volonté". (Palgrave 1894-1901). Antoine Louis Claude, Comte Destutt de Tracy (1754-1836), French senator, philosopher, and economist. An important intellectual leader during the time of Napoleon, he had been a member of the States-General (1789) and the Senate. Besides philosophical works influenced by Condillac, he wrote "Traité d'économie politique", his only major work on economics. Production meant for him a change in form or place. Value, he said, must be expressed in units of value, but he himself did not recommend a specific unit of measurement. (Mai, p. 70). Thomas Jefferson made the American people acquainted with Destutt de Tracy's work through his translation of the unpublished French original. Revised and corrected by himself, it was published as "A Treatise on Political Economy" (Georgetown, Joseph Milligan, 1817). Goldsmith 23731. Kress C.1051. Einaudi 1547. A most attractive copy.

xiv, 282 pp. Index. "The chief significance of this book is that it offers an introduction to a vast range of economic thought which has conditioned the current state of the art, but is little appreciated by many university teachers, let alone their students. Among the more specific novelties of the book are: the attention given to pre-Socratic thought in Greece; emphasis on divergent assessments of economic life in the Christian and Jewish traditions; the survey of the Mishnah; and the prominence given to Leonard Lessius as a figure in European economics." - from dust jacket. Book clean and unmarked with very light wear. Binding tight. Light wear to dust jacket now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart. A nice copy. Book

15706Bruxelles, 1788. (4), 175, (1) pp. 8vo. Modern boards. Cioranescu 40562; not in INED; not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Martin & Walter. Second edition, first published in October 1788. Linguet had printed, in the 116th number of his Annales, a proposal for fiscal reform which he had first publicized in his Annales in 1778 and 1779, an exepient for terminating once and for all the chronic state of financial crisis that had precipitated Louis's capitulation to the aristocrats. The king ignored Linguet's lesson in political and economic pragmatism. Financiers and capitalists were up in arms against it, as was the Paris parlement. This body condamned the 116th number of the Annales to be lacerated and burned at the foot of the grand staircase in the courtyard of the Palais de Justice. Linguet, in rage, published his La France plus qu'angloise in October 1788 and included in it a thinly veiled warning to the king that his next blunder, a fatal one, would be to retreat headlong into the arms of aristocratic reactionairies more English in their pretensions to exercising legislative supremacy than Commons or Lords. This move would signal disaster for the monarchy, as it would alienate the Third Estate from the throne as well as from the aristocratic party, driving it into isolation, and from there into independence and the revolution. At the same time, Linguet was educating the Third Estate in this work: how to recognize their rights and act in their own best interest (For an extensive analysis of this work see: D. Gay Levy, The ideas and Careers of Simon-Nicolas-Henry Linguet, pp. 243-4).

Necker's famous defence against accusations by Calonne who claimed that Necker's tenure in office which ended in 1781 was not the success it was thought to be and that Necker's famous Compte Rendu was based on incorrect figures. Calonne claimed his figures were based on what he called "comptes effectifs" which he however consistently failed to produce to prove his point. The previous controller general, Joly de Fleury, confirmed that he believed that Necker's Compte Rendu was accurate, a claim which shocked the keeper of the seals, Hue de Miromesnil and the King: Calonne was dismissed and Necker returned to office shorlty thereafter. Pierre Remond de Sainte-Albine (1699-1778), collaborator of the journal l'Europe savante and later working for the Mercure; he was also member of the Berlin Academy. An effort on behalf of the author to overcome the resistance of craft guilds to the introduction of rolled lead sheeting for roofing and gutters. Rolled lead had been in use in the UK since 1670. But the first mill to produce this product in France was established only in 1729 and met with considerable resistance from the guild of plumbers. This pamphlet defends the advantages of rolled sheet versus cast lead and also goes into a good explanation of manufacturing techniques (all illustrated). The engraver of the plates is identified as Dheulland, presumably G. Dheulland who worked on Belidor's massive hydraulic architecture book.
