1910100518<p>December 1909 and October 11th 1910. 1910. Very good. - Folio 12-1/2 inches high by 6-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed self-wraps. A 12 page auction catalog including the cover page and a blank leaf simply listing the lots of Alaskan seal furs by quantity and size of the pups from extra small middling and large offered for sale by C.M. Lampson & Co. The catalog is folded with a small hole to the inner edge of the last blank leaf. The auction catalog for the sale to take place on December 17 1909 is signed in full at the top of the first page by Alfred Fraser the NY representative of Lampson & Co. and George M. Bowers then Commissioner of Fisheries who was later elected as U.S. Congressman from West Virginia.</p><p>The catalog serving as example of the terms of sale for a subsequent auction is stapled to a 4-page typed document dated October 11 1910 titled "Memorandum relative to the consignment of certain Alaskan fur seal skins by the Secretary of Commerce and Labor to the firm of C.M. Lampson and Company" outlining the conditions by which the furs are to be shipped to London by sea. The terms include marine insurance coverage by Lloyds Underwriters as well as London Assurance Corporation and Alliance Assurance Company Limited. Also noted are the conditions of transportation the percentage of the sale which C.M. Lampson & Co. will receive "10 The the firm of C.M. Lampson and Company in consideration of its service in the premises shall be entitled to receive and to retain out of such gross proceeds of said sale a commission of four percent 4% of the gross amount thereof. The remainder of such gross proceeds after deducting the cost of transportation and marine insurance hereinbefore mentioned shall represent net proceeds of the said sale payable to the Secretary of Commerce and Labor." The document previously mentioned that the conditions of sale would be similar to those of the attached auction catalog "8 That the conditions of sale shall be substantially the same as the conditions governing the sale of seal skins at auction by C.M. Lampson and Company in London on December 17 1909 as set forth in the printed circular of said sale attached thereof." The document is signed in full by Alfred Fraser for C.M. Lampson Co. and George M. Bowers as Commissioner of Fisheries for the Secretary of Commerce & Labor.</p><p>The document and catalog are stapled within the light blue folded cover sheet enclosing the document. Very good.</p><p>The London-based fur sale business C.M. Lampson & Co. Ltd. was established in the 1830s by the American entrepreneur Curtis Miranda Lampson who became a member of the Hudson's Bay Company's Governor and Committee. His sones contiued the business after his death The Hudson's Bay Company later acquired 30% of Lampson shares in 1928.</p><p>Born in England Alfred Fraser 1840-1915 moved to Brooklyn New York in 1878. He purchased land in Sands Point in 1895 where he built a summer home. Fraser worked in the fur trade and was employed by the London based firm of C.M. Lampson & Co. He was among the founder of Port Washington NY's St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.</p><p>The American politician George Meade Bowers 1863-1925 was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892. He was treasurer of the board of World's Fair commissioners for West Virginia and served as the United States Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries. Bowers was elected to the U.S. Congress representing West Virginia in 1916.</p> December, 1909 and October 11th, 1910. paperback
