Précoce édition, publiée à Venise par Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari en 1548, qui manque à l'ensemble des bibliothèques en ligne: BnF et au CCFr, à KVC, à WorldCat. Un unique exemplaire recensé: réunion des Bibliothèques italiennes (ICCU). Mû par un sentiment pro-français et dirigé contre Rome, l’auteur prophétise dans une perspective millénariste, l’avènement d’une ère de paix internationale (‘Monarchia del mondo’), de pacification des querelles intestines et de tolérance religieuse universelle. Bayle a commenté cet ouvrage dans son dictionnaire (art. 'Xénophane', 4:518), à propos de la partialité des historiens : "J’ai lu un livre italien qui a pour titre ‘Monarchia del nostro signor Giesu Christo’ (…). Le premier volume porte une mention fictive de "deuxième édition". "Plaidoyer en faveur de son action comme ministre des Affaires étrangères au moment de la guerre d’Espagne de 1823, et plus largement en faveur de la Restauration (…). Le lecteur est aujourd’hui en face d’un chef-d’oeuvre, véritable morceau des ‘Mémoires d’Outre-tombe’. On y retrouve le style éblouissant de l’écrivain, la verve du polémiste, l’imagination du poète. L’ouvrage contient de nombreux passages des Mémoires, Chateaubriand ayant hésité longtemps à y réintégrer ce texte (…). En 1790, l'Espagne invoqua ce traité pour faire appel au roi de France après un incident survenu avec les troupes britanniques dans le Pacifique. "Louis XVI et ses ministres furent enclins à envoyer l'aide demandée, même au risque de la guerre; mais l'Assemblée nationale, confrontée pour la première fois à des questions diplomatiques, rejeta la demande espagnole. Un régime national et représentatif ne reconnaissait pas les liens familiaux entre les maisons régnantes comme une base adéquate pour des accords internationaux, et encore moins pour des actions militaires" (W. Bertram Hulen Washington Bureau correspondent at the New York Times was known as the dean of State Department reporters. He had more than twenty-five years experience covering the State Department and White House and was the author of a highly regarded book Inside The State Department. Hulen was killed along with a dozen other American correspondents on July 12 1949 in a plane crash near Bombay India. The party was returning from an inspection of Indonesia at the invitation of the Netherlands government. This archive consists of letters and mementos dating from the 1920s up to the immediate aftermath of his death. Most of the journalistic items are letters from colleagues and friends many congratulatory commenting on the publication of his book. There are some interesting letters from correspondents telling about their assignments. Person letters to his wife tell of his work the life of a foreign correspondent and some of the more interesting of his assignments especially on the campaign trail with presidential candidates. There are many letters and telegrams of condolence written to his wife and to the New York Times after his death. Also included are credentials of one type or another issued for special assignments invitations and a file of correspondence and records related to Hulens family genealogy. Specifically the contents include a telegram of condolence to Mrs. Hulen from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands a 26 photo of President Coolidge and the White House Press Corp taken in 1929 a film roll sent by the Netherlands government of the time the group of correspondents spent in Indonesia a portrait of Hulen a letter of condolence from poet Strickland Gillilan a cocktail recipe sent to Hulen from the USSR Embassy in the aftermath of a reception there a letter from Cordell Hull another from Joseph Grew both Secretaries of State a detailed 1932 letter from Nelson T. Johnson of the China Legation of the United States about conditions in China specifically about the Japanese belligerence. There are telegrams of shock in the days immediately following Hulens death many from noted New York Times reporters of the day and dozens of letters from politicians diplomats journalists. One invitation is to the birthday celebration given for King Alexander I from the Minister of the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes. A number of letters are from his colleagues at the New York Times including Arthur Sulzberger. And much more including an invitation to a meeting of The Hitler Gang. unknown

Édition originale in-4° de librairie en premier tirage, rare, du traité historique signé à Bréda le 31 juillet 1667. Publiée par les "imprimeurs & libraires ordinaires du Roy", avec privilège et vignettes de titre aux armes royales. Les deux parties possèdent une page de titre particulière, sous pagination continue. Le traité de Bréda, signé par l’Angleterre, la République des Provinces-Unies, la France et le Danemark, mettait un terme à la Deuxième Guerre anglo-néerlandaise (1665-1667), alors que les armées de Louis XIV commençaient à envahir les Pays-Bas espagnols. Les Néerlandais abandonnèrent aux Anglais les territoires de la Nouvelle Amsterdam (New York) contre les fabriques de sucre du Suriname et l'île de Run dans les Moluques, monopole de la noix muscade (!). Par ailleurs, l'Angleterre rendait l'Acadie à la France en échange d'Antigua, de Montserrat et de la partie anglaise de Saint-Christophe. (Dionne, 'Inventaire chronologique (...) With 6 plates including a frontispiece depicting the dedicatee Victor Amedeus II Duke of Savoy; a fold-out illustrating the Roman triumphal arch at Susa outside of Turin with a restored inscription; 3 fold-outs reproducing Roman papyri manuscripts; 1 plate depicting Roman coins. An illustration on p. 236 accompanies the text showing a winged Roman or Etruscan spirit. The title page is printed in red and black and includes an engraved vignette. Text is in Italian with Latin sections. Bound in full contemporary mottled calf showing rubbing staining and general wear. Hinges and head caps are carefully restored; board corners are repaired. Several gilt panel lines on the spine are renewed with new gold somewhat brighter than the old. Interior pages are generally crisp and fresh. Occasional scholarly Latin marginalia are written as glosses in a very neat miniscule old hand 19th cent. or earlier sometimes easy at first glance to confuse with the regular printed glosses. A small marginal tear on p. 93 is neatly sealed. A minor tear near the hinge of the triumphal arch plate is also sealed. Scipione Maffeis "Istoria diplomatica" is a landmark book in the history of paleography. This work firmly established the unity of the Latin script and disproved Jean Mabillions earlier theory that Latin upper case lower case and cursive characters derived from five different early alphabets. Maffeis book also analyzes the Ravenna papyri a collection of late Roman administrative documents from the chancery of the Archdiocese of Ravenna dating from the 5th-7th centuries c.e. many of which are here transcribed and published for the first time. Other documents are also mentioned including the famous bronze tablet "Senatus Consultum" prohibiting the celebration of the Bacchanalia. Another section discusses the origin of the Etruscan and Italic alphabet.
