pp. xciv [Introduction in English], (1), 162 [Latin Text of De Arte Logistica] + Engraved frontispiece portrait of Napier; and a full page mezzotint style engraving of the old Castle Merchiston. Large 4to. 300 mm. Original cloth backed boards binding; joints cracked. Hardbound. Very good. First Edition. John Napier, 8th Laird of Merchiston, (1550-1617), was a Scottish mathematician - the Inventor of Logarithms. His 'Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio' (1614) contained the first logarithmic table and the first use of the word logarithm. His Rabdologiae (1617) gave various methods for abbreviating arithmetical calculations. One method of multiplication uses a system of numbered rods called Napier's rods, or Napier's bones; this was a major improvement on the ancient system of counters then in use. Napier also introduced the decimal point in writing numbers. The material here, dealing mainly with arithmetic and algebra, survived in manuscript form and was transcribed, after Napier's death, by his son Robert for the benefit of Henry Briggs, who further edited it. Sponsored by a descendant, Mark Napier, this is its first publication. From this work, it appears that Napier had investigated imaginary roots of equations, a subject he refers to as a great algebraic secret. SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! OVERSIZE BX 4

Four volumes. Frontis engravings. 12 mo. Some foxing and offsetting, but really rather clean. Needs rebinding. An early English edition of Rousseau's fundamental work on education, first published in Paris in 1762, and first translated into English just one year later. One of the key works of the Enlightenment, "Emile" or "Emilius" is a didactic essay mixed in a novel. The possibilities of an education directed towards developing republican citizenship are explored via an account of the upbringing of a rich man's son by a tutor who is given unlimited authority over him. The basic argument of the book is that vice and error, are alien to a child's original nature, and are introduced by external agencies whose artificial social constraints fashion them into conditions of servitude, mutual distrust, and alienation. This critical view of the monarchy, government, and church forced Rousseau to flee to Switzerland, and subsequently to England at the invitation of Scottish philosopher David Hume. He returned to France incognito in 1767. Very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR3

"Research on special education has tended to focus on technical and professional aspects of provision and matters of placement. The voice of the pupil with special educational needs has tended to be silenced by professional discourses, reducing him or her to a passive recipient of specialist provision. This book attemps to undo some of this, by featuring the accounts of eleven pupils with special needs and their mainstream peers. Julie Allan uses Foucault's 'box of tools' to analyse the pupil accounts, and the themes of the 'technologies of the self' and 'governmentality' from his work are developed in new ways."--Publisher. || Chapters entitled: 1.
