"Erasmus Smith Schools were founded under a charter of 1669 by Charles II. Erasmus Smith, a London alderman, obtained property in Ireland under the Act of Settlement and endowed schools with part of the estates thus acquired. His original intention was to establish five grammar schools, but, in order to guarantee better salaries for the teachers and provide clothes for the existing pupils, decided to open only three, at Drogheda, Galway and Tipperary. Under the charter these had to be free schools for twenty poor children, (to be named by the founders or governors), dwelling within two miles of the school, as well as for all the tenants of Erasmus Smith. They were to be instructed in writing and 'casting accounts,' Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and if so desired, to be prepared for university."?Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. About The Book : Since the publication of the older edition so much additional knowledge has been acquired in most branches of classical study that it has been found necessary, not merely to alter, but practically to rewrite many of the articles : this applies particularly to the articles on Mythology, and to many of those on Topography. Several new plans and maps have been inserted to illustrate the articles on those places which are most important in Greek and Roman literature. Among these are the map of the Troad and that of Syracuse, which is based upon one in Freeman's Sicily. For the alterations in the map of Athens, and for the description of the city, much help has been derived from Miss Harrison's Mythology and Monuments of Athens, horn Dr. Lolling' s treatise, and from Professor Gardner's New Chapters in Greek History, from which book also the plans of Tiryns, Eleusis, and Olympia, with much valuable information, have been taken. About The Author : Sir William Smith (1813 – 1893) was an English lexicographer. He became known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Smith next turned his attention to lexicography. His first attempt was A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, which appeared in 1842, the greater part being written by him. Then followed the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology in 1849. A parallel Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography appeared in 1857, with some leading scholars of the day associated with the task. In 1867, Smith became editor of the Quarterly Review, a post he held until his death. G.E.Marindin (1841-1939) Formerly fellow of king’s college, Cambridge.
