About The Book : Since the publication of the older edition so much additional knowledge has been acquired in most branches of classical study that it has been found necessary, not merely to alter, but practically to rewrite many of the articles : this applies particularly to the articles on Mythology, and to many of those on Topography. Several new plans and maps have been inserted to illustrate the articles on those places which are most important in Greek and Roman literature. Among these are the map of the Troad and that of Syracuse, which is based upon one in Freeman's Sicily. For the alterations in the map of Athens, and for the description of the city, much help has been derived from Miss Harrison's Mythology and Monuments of Athens, horn Dr. Lolling' s treatise, and from Professor Gardner's New Chapters in Greek History, from which book also the plans of Tiryns, Eleusis, and Olympia, with much valuable information, have been taken. About The Author : Sir William Smith (1813 – 1893) was an English lexicographer. He became known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Smith next turned his attention to lexicography. His first attempt was A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, which appeared in 1842, the greater part being written by him. Then followed the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology in 1849. A parallel Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography appeared in 1857, with some leading scholars of the day associated with the task. In 1867, Smith became editor of the Quarterly Review, a post he held until his death. G.E.Marindin (1841-1939) Formerly fellow of king’s college, Cambridge. Edited works: Letters Descriptive of Journeys in Europe and Asia Minor in the Years 1794-1796. About The Book : THE Dictionary of Classical Antiquities, which is here offered to the all of, is founded on a work by Dr. Oskar Seyffert, of Berlin, The departments of classical learning included in his dictionary are the Mythology and Religion, the Literature and Art, and the constitutional and social Antiquities of Greece and Rome. Within the compass of a single volume it comprises all the subjects usually treated in a Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, while it also supplies information on matters of Mythology and Literature which has generally to be looked for in the pages of a Classical Dictionary. Besides separate articles on Greek and Roman divinities, and on the lives and works of the philosophers, the historians, the orators, the poets, and the artists of Greece and Rome, it gives a general and comprehensive view of such subjects as Greek and Roman Religion, Philosophy, History, Rhetoric, Literature, Architecture, Painting, Sculpture, Music, and the Drama. Similarly, in the department of Antiquities, besides separate treatment of subordinate details, it deals with important topics, such as the Boule and Ecclesia, the Comitia and the Senate, Commerce and War, the Houses, the Ships, the Temples, and the Theatres of the ancients. Moses, January 1, 1856, Philadelphia. 180mm. Original full cloth binding lettered in gold and embossed in blind. Nice copy. Hardbound. Very good+. English born Benn Pitman (1822-1910), assisted his brother Isaac in perfecting the latter's system of shorthand phonography (1837). From 1843 till 1852 he lectured on the system throughout Great Britain, and had a large share in compiling his brother's text-books. At Isaac's request he came to the United States in January, 1853, to give instruction in phonography, and settled at Cincinnati. In 1855 he discovered the process of producing relief copper-plates of engraved work by the galvanic process known as electrotypes, for which he was awarded a silver medal by the Cincinnati Mechanics' Institute. The following year he succeeded, in connection with Dr. J. B. Burns, in producing stereotype plates by the gelatine in photo-engraving. From 1865 to 1867 he acted as the official stenographer during the trials of the assassin, of President Lincoln, the "Sons of Liberty," the Ku-Klux Klan, and other similar government prosecutions. He also edited and compiled the printed reports of these trials. In 1873 he abandoned reporting and became connected with the school of design, now the art academy, of the University of Cincinnati. His object was to secure the development of American decorative art and to open up a new profession for women. SHORTHAND
