Manuscript presentation on the front fly-leaf "For Charles Greville Esq. / From the Author." The recipient is probably the father of the famous political diarist, Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865). Also with the small printed bookplate of DeWitt Miller, Cross River, Westchester County, NY. DeWitt Miller (born in 1857) was a very famous book collector and public lecturer. This edition is almost identical to Baretti's 'Easy Phraseology for the use of Young Ladies'. The main difference is that it was issued without the Preface written by Baretti's intimate friend, Samuel Johnson. Baretti (1719-1789) was a remarkable character, whose tale cannot be told in this space - except to say that he was a warmly embraced member of Johnson's circle. He graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, in 1820, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1823. Barnes was ordained as a Presbyterian minister by the Presbytery of Elizabethtown, New Jersey, in 1825, and was the pastor successively of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, New Jersey (1825-1830), and of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia (1830-1868).
