1708819th c. Women Education Handwritten letter from Principal at Washington Female Seminary in Washington PA. February 15 1891. On personalized stationary for Principal of Washington Female Seminary Miss N. Sherrard. Addressed to "My Dear Sister" and signed "June." With original mailing envelope. 2 pages. 9 x 5.5 inches. She writes on personal matters with her sister and gives an update on the school and teachers: "Bessie Ewing is now well.she is the most popular teacher in Seminary. The girls are all quite well at present & I hope they may keep well all spring." The Washington Female Seminary was a Presbyterian seminary for women operating from 1836 to 1948 in Washington Pennsylvania. During the 19th century it was well-regarded as one of the top institutions for women in the area. It was founded abolitionist Francis Julius LeMoyne and Alexander Reed and its formal charter came in 1839. By 1886 there were over 100 students enrolled; and the curriculum included both a preparatory course which generally gained admission to the finest women's colleges and a regular course with studies in music art and elocution. Carter President of the School writes about examinations and fundraising to Rev. H. M. Garfield of New Haven CT. 1 page. 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Stating in part:Â "I have been more busily engaged than even you can imagine. I took it into my head to get up a semi-annual Examination which draws heavily upon my time and energies and to cap the whole I narrowly escaped the loss of one of my eyes. A piece of red hot burning coal few into it."Â The Albany Female Seminary was a very early addition to the Female Seminary Movement; it was founded in 1828 and three of its seven Principals were women. 1709319th c. Women Education Partial handwritten letter regarding the Monroe Female Seminary in Monroe County Michigan. No date c. 1850. John P. Le Roy writes to a friend regarding a potential business dealing with the Seminary. 2 pages 10 x 8 in. Signature page present but opening page absent. Stating in part: "Mr. Boyd of the Monroe Female Seminary said that if you could furnish capital enough he did not know but he would like to take you as a partner in his school but as I supposed from what he intended that he would want a partner with some three thousand dollars at least to invest." Mr. Boyd in reference here is Erasmus Boyd who was President of the Seminary. At this time Seminary or Institutes for women were being created to offer educational opportunities to female students in preparation for them to work as teachers. The seminaries were private institutions without public funding so having enough financial backers was essential for the success of the school. In very good condition. "My Commencement." New York: Dodd Mead and Company 1904. Entries from 1906-1910. Original blue cloth boards. 8 x 5 in. Gilt detail to spine and front cover. 239 pages. "This book will be found to be a convenient form in which to keep a record of one's commencement and all the interesting facts connected with it including accounts of the exercises brief sketches of the teachers the classmates newspaper clippings etc. The keeping of such a record will afford a great deal of entertainment not only at the time when it is all fresh in the mind but in future years when it will serve to recall many pleasant memories which otherwise would be forgotten." Memory albums were quite popular in America at this time especially among young women at female academies who would fill out books to remember time spent together.<br/><br/>Records Antoinette Butler's social life and academic record including her studies in French German Latin Physics Chemistry Geometry History and Literature. Hand-drawn diagram of the commencement stage page 30 records of all her friend's commencement gowns "white handkerchief linen embroidered in Japan with the wisteria pattern" and "white ruffled mull dress trimmed with val lace. Made Empire with straps over the shoulders." 6 photos of classmates with entries in their own hands pasted into book. Also includes 11 photos of teachers and staff including two African-Americans identified as the Janitor and Janitress. Includes areas to enter information on the book's Owner their School the Commencement Exercises the Class Classmates and Reunions. Includes a short handwritten history of the school Brooklyn Heights Seminary. "Miss Brigham who was associated with him was a wonderful woman in every way. Every girl who was under her influence feels the uplifting force to this day and has imparted one small part of it to her children. After Miss Brigham's death in a railroad accident a Memorial hall was erected to her memory in connection with the Young Women's Christian Association.The curriculum which includes Kindergarten and one year of college work embraces almost every department of education." A note from her grandfather pasted in congratulating her on her graduation: "My darling granddaughter Antoinette - On this happy occasion that marks one of the transitional specks of your life I gladly transfer to your keeping one fo the the most precious souvenirs of the sainted grandmother whom you have only known through the loving memories of your own dear father and of the two aunties - one translated to the heavenly life - who with myself have watched with intense interest your development in to a lovely and helpful womanhood. God bless you my child! Grandfather."<br/><br/>Includes entries from several reunion gatherings around New York at venues such as the Women's University Club on Madison Square; and gatherings as they transitioned to adult lives: "This was a purpose for giving a silk stocking 'shower' for Marjorie Speers who had just announced her engagement to Gilbert Browning. She is the first one of our class to be engaged." Also pasted into book: 3 images of the school; report card; commencement invitation; commencement program; a color printed card "With Love and Devotion"; 8 newspaper clippings regarding the graduating class; the yellow silk ribbon which tied her diploma; the tulle bow which tied her commencement flowers; lovely hand-colored Class Day Program; 1 letter addressed to "My beautiful lady No longer the school girl!" handwritten speech that Butler gave during the Class Day Program. "These Journals are intended to contain a record of the daily course of instruction and occupation through which Students pass whilst at the Institution. It is expected that particular attention should be paid to the plainness and legibility of the writing; to the grammar spelling and punctuation; and also to the general arrangement and neatness of execution." All entries dated to 1857. Weekly written class schedules included throughout notebook listing coursework in Reading Scripture Language Numbers Writing Natural History Domestic Economy Dictation and Geography. Student includes notes and short essays on topics including animal and plant life. "Lesson on the Whale: The most remarkable peculiarities of the whale tail are as follows - though they inhabit water and never leave it they are not fish but mammals breathing air by lungs and therefore coming to the surface to breath." "Botany Leaves. Leaves are flat extended objects growing on the stems and consisting of two parts namely the stalk and blade known by botanists as the petiole and lamina." Also includes entries on the Gospels and notes on her own general academic performance from the past week: "6 errors in Gram. & Comp.; 4 omissions. This journal bears evidence of great carelessness." The rivers are not deep; the pure clear water scarcely reaches the chest. When the Indians want to make an enjoyable excursion with their wives and children they go to these islands. They either swim across the river for they are excellent swimmers or they wade across carrying the little children. In fact the mothers can manage three children at once the smallest on a shoulder clutching its hand and the other two under her arms. With the free hand the women carry a basket full of fruit or other food for the occasion. For fear of meeting enemies the men carry bows and arrows. In order not to wet them they attach the quiver to their hair and hold the bows stretched and ready with and arrow prepared instantly to defend themselves as can be seen in our engraving. "John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill Mass.the house still stands in which Whittier was reared.Whittier was taken with illness while visiting at the home of his friend.he had a slight paralytic stroke which produced a difficulty in taking food o medicine and it was plain that he could not be removed to Annesbury where he had always hoped to die. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. Autograph Letter Signed by Hodgson on December 31 1863. 14-page letter on from the seminary days of author Emily Hodgson profiled by close friends and suffragists Frances Willard and Mary Livermore in A Woman of the Century 1893. 8 x 5 inches. 14 pages of lined white stationary. At this time Hodgson was a student at the prestigious Ipswich Female Seminary an early school for girl students where she wrote in lively prose about the New Year's party she prepares to surprise her classmates and hints at her early literary ambitions. About living in a dormitory and celebrating New Year's Eve with other students: "Such a gay time as the six damsels that board in this house are having tonight! As we are all ''young ladies" Mrs. Cowles has given us permission to sit up till quarter past twelve. I was commissioned to provide refreshments arrange the table etc. and really I feel quite proud. None of the girls except my assistant have as yet seen it and I know they do not expect to see quite such a grand affair grand for Boarding school . " New Years Eve don't come but once a year" I hear one of the girls exclaiming. I know they are coming to see why I am so long- Sure enough- and now they are gone." <br/><br/>About her early writing attempts: "I have had a letter come from an old teacher of mine. And I know you won't think me vain if I send it to you for as you fly so hard to have me do well and are the means of my enjoying myself so much and giving what enjoyment I am able to others around me I know it will please you to see that I sometimes succeed . she like Mrs. B is not ordinary woman . she is a very finely educated lady. and I feel pleased that she should like my feeble endeavors. The lady Miss Briggs who writes the note enclosed has been composition teacher here for a long time. You would hardly judge from this not which is far from a good letter from her that was very easy and elegant with her pen. She has written three or four prize essays and won the prizes."<br/><br/>Ipswich Female Seminary was founded in Massachusetts in 1828 and the school's focus was on preparing girls for careers as teachers and missionaries. It offered a "rigorous curriculum" including study of English arithmetic geography chemistry human physiology history the natural sciences religion vocal music and calisthenics and placed an emphasis on "standards of personal conduct and discipline." As part of their preparation students practiced teaching with guidance from school instructors. Mild toning and a few light stains. All sheets except 1 have minor tape repairs at folds. Comprised of a calligraphic title and frontis plus 59 hand drawn-and-colored maps done by a young woman in her first three years of teacher training. Throughout Mary annotates on the margins which year and term she is in and occasionally notes that the map was drawn "From Memory"; and each map has penciled corrections and assessments. <br/><br/>with Geography notebook of Allison Jane Gillespy: Quarter cloth over marbled boards. Calligraphic title page and 35 intricately hand drawn maps from the British Empire Europe and the Middle East. <br/><br/>A pairing of beautiful and research-worthy notebooks documenting teacher training in the late nineteenth century as well as providing a look into how geographies changed across time and how British educators were being trained to perceive and educate the young about other parts of the world and how they connected to the British empire. With nearly 100 pages combined the notebooks offer scholars important comparative opportunities and means for better understanding the rising number of women educators and authors publishing works that engaged geography and international cultures during the Victorian era.<br/><br/>"The Wesleyan Methodists had a school for ministers' daughters at Trinity Hall Southport.which admitted both boarders and day girls.to educate ministers daughters and train teachers" Roach. Such programs functioned like an apprentice system taking a senior pupil typically thirteen years old and putting her in a five year assistantship to her own instructor. Pupil teachers typically took on responsibility for teaching lower classes observing their superiors educate the more advanced students and completing their own educations. By the 1870s these programs had become standardized to ensure proper preparation for instructors Robinson. <br/><br/>Mary's maps trace this process. As she moved from her first to her third year in this notebook the quality and care she puts into her work improves. Her handwriting and attention to detail matures. And her assessments move from Fair to Good and Very Good. Maps in the notebook include nearby locales such as Ireland Scotland and the British Isles as a whole; European nations including Sweden Norway and Prussia as well as eastern Europe and Russia. Mary also maps out "Arabia" and the "Chinese Empire" as well as "Further India" revealing a wide array of changing borders and shifting cultural attitudes. <br/><br/>While Allison does not leave any marker of her class age or school the level of intricacy in her maps suggests she was a senior student or finished instructor. Quite clean internally - in two parts a third was published in 1689. 14 70 8 154pp<br/><br/>The first and second parts of Ware's extensive and pernicious forgeries of church history intended to stir up anti-Catholic anti-Irish and anti-Jesuit sentiment. They played a large role in the absurd stories surrounding the Popish Plot and many of Ware's creations continued to pollute reformation history into the 19th 20th and even 21st centuries. Ware was the son of a prominent historian and used his father John's name to legitimize the documents that he "found" - one of the most long lived forgeries was a Cranmer letter at the beginning of part two which entered into Cranmer's works and was preserved for centuries through misattributions by historians such as John Strype and wishful thinking.
