Ownership signature of Clarence M. Brownell 1828-1862 made as an adult rather than as the five-year-old pupil he is listed as here together with his ten-year-old sister Emilia 1823-1838 her named misspelled Emma in this catalogue. Below Clarence's signature is the gift inscription of relative France E. Brownell to a J. O. Goodwin dated 1890. Records indicate that Clarence Brownell perished on the White Nile in Africa at the age of thirty-four. OCLC locates one copy of this registry as of May 2020 at the Connecticut Historical Society. Spine is worn but shows original panels. Title page has name and date of prior owner - ""A. McIhenney US Army 1813"" Book was purchased at an estate sale of Alan McIhenney the great grand-son of original owner. Be the second owner of this 1811 book. Most of the plates are only moderately foxed but almost all of the text pages are totally clear of markings or flaws. Despite the lack of boards and a missing plate I believe not sure this is a great copy of an early and important piece of Americana. The Port Folio was a Philadelphia literary and political magazine published 1801-1814 by Joseph Dennie one of the leading scholars and authors of the Federalist period who wrote under the name Oliver Oldschool. Benjamin Franklin and many other intelligentsia of the day were contributors it quickly became the one of if not the most important magazine devoted to literature and politics in the United States. Very good A charming copy of Ruskin's essays affectionately inscribed to Nesta Inglis the pioneering headmistress of the independent girls' school Tudor Hall Banbury; seemingly donated to the school library when she was still a pupil 1912. Ernestine "Nesta" Inglis 1895–1990 was an educator and headmistress "who played a pivotal role in the history of Tudor Hall: attending as a pupil rescuing the School from closure as Headmistress and overseeing the eventual purchase of Wykham Park in 1944. Her vision secured the future of the School". According to a former pupil "Nesta's influence at Tudor was to make it a more progressive school following The Dalton Plan – an educational model that aimed to tailor each student's study to their interests and abilities and to promote independent learning." Rare with only a single other recorded copy Brown "A Paradise of Dainty Devices" is comprised of over 100 pages of original poetry and prose by students at Mademoiselle Ruel's School in Manhattan in 1894. It was compiled by and privately printed for L.C. Baker Professor of Rhetoric and attributes each piece to the students via an index with their pseudonyms in the index: Boston Dido Vernon Van Flic Donovan Meredith Hooker and Pshaw. Subjects of the student's pieces include nature friendship school death dreaming Venice Santa Claus and more. There is also a poem about each student titled with their pseudonyms pp. 46-53 and revealing a little about each of their personalities. The scene is set with a policeman interrupting three men a footballer a man in a bowler and an unconscious gentleman who resembles Alexander Hamilton in flagrante with exposed phalluses while two devils one with a phallus look on. The title below reads "Don't Blow It." The police uniform is extremely similar to those of the Maryland US police of the mid 1800s. unknown
