Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1749, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Allegory on the three ages of man, after Titian; landscape with in the right foreground, seated on the ground, a naked young man and a woman playing pipe, on the left a winged putto stepping over two sleeping children, and beyond an old man contemplating a skull. The painting is now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. From 'Raccolta Di Opere Scelte'.Around 1749 it was decided that the plates executed by Lefevre for the famous "Opera Selectiora" set were to be republished. Because of a change in taste, and because they had worn off, the plates were either retouched with burin work by artists such as Giuseppe Waggner and Johann Gottfried Saiter, or completely remade. The set was published as "Le opere scelte dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio di Cadore, e da Paolo Cagliari di Verona" (Venice, 1749). A second edition, with added plates from the collection of Lovisa, was published by Teodoro Viero (Venice, 1786) under a different title: "Raccolta Di Opere Scelte Dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio, Antonio Regillo detto il Pordenone, Giacomo Robusti detto il Tintoretto, Paolo Calliari Veronese, Dario Varotari detto il Padoanino, Li Bassani, Giacomo Palma, Giuseppe Salviati, e varj altri celebri Maestri della Scola Veneziana, che fiorirono ne' tempi posteriori. Disegnate, ed Incise in parte Da Valentino Le Febre Di Bruxelles, ed in parte Da Silvestro Manaigo, e da Andrea Zucchi Veneti". Luigi Servolini (Livorno, 1906 - 1981) One of the great masters of Italian engraving, Luigi Servolini, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, then perfecting himself in History of Medieval and Modern Art at the University of Florence. He has held various roles within the Italian academic world and his production as an art critic is also impressive, a profession he did simultaneously with that of engraver. In 1935 he promoted the creation of a Xylograph Museum in Carpi, birthplace of the master Ugo da Carpi (ca 1480 - Rome 1532), inviting Italian xylographers to send their artworks, which today constitute an important nucleus of the museum itself, inaugurated in 1937. Together with Carlo Carrà he founded the association of the Italian engravers. His woodcuts are characterized by a classic cut and a formal order, and are soon recognizable. He has been present in as many as six biennials of Venice and seven four-years of Rome. Literature Comanducci A.M. Questo raro lavoro fa parte dello splendido atlante anatomico del XVIII secolo, il The Tables of the Skeleton and Muscles of the Human Body di Albino. Etching with engraving, 1747. Printed by H. Woodfall for John and Paul Knapton, London, 1749. A very good impression on contemporary laid paper, with margins, perfect condition. This rare work is part of the most splendid anatomical atlas of 18th century, The Tables of the Skeleton and Muscles of the Human Body, published by John and Paul Knapton in London without author's permission (later that year they issued an English translation of the work), only two years after the 1st edition was published in 1747 in Leiden (largely at Albinus' own expense). This second edition is printed in the same enormous format as the first of 1747, with the celebrated Jan Wandelaar's plates re-engraved for this edition by Charles Grignion, Jean-Baptiste Scotin, Ludovico-Antonio Ravenet and Louis-Pierre Boitard. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect.
