It offered courses in "topography construction of maps navigation fencing ethicks natural theology evidences of Christianity and metaphysicks." Rates for attendance were high and the level of matriculation could not sustain the school. In 1863 Oliver G. Steele wrote "It was the great pet of the city. It was however too expensive for the time failing to reach the great body of our people; and changes of teachers and policy soon brought its career to a close." An act to dissolve the corporation and to provide for the just disposition of the property was passed in 1846. 1841162210
1841. No Binding. Very Good. AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL. South View of the North of England Agricultural School Great Ayton. Lithograph by S. Straker after Thomas Cail. Slight marginal crease marks but very scarce. The image is repeated on the reverse. central image measures: 205mm x 270mm. c1841. ~ The North of England Agricultural School was founded by The Society of Friends in 1841. The School was established in direct response to growing concern about the education of children of those Friends who had been 'disowned' often as a result of 'marrying out'. Unable to attend existing Friends schools it was felt these children were deprived of an education which would provide 'that grounding which would have made them recruits for the Society. Their lives and possibilities were lost to the Friends.' A visit in 1840 by Jonathan Backhouse and his wife Hannah Chapman Backhouse to the recently founded Brookfield School near Dublin provided Friends in Durham and North Yorkshire with a model: a practical education in farming for boys and domestic service for girls combined with a good Quaker education. A boarding school was preferred and one in close proximity to 'a considerable number of our society' both aimed at winning back hearts and minds. ref: G. 189024941890. Pen and brownish ink on cream laid paper 3 /14 x 2 3/4 inches 83 x 70 mm the full sheet. Scattered light areas of surface soiling unobtrusive. While "English School 19th century" is a broad attribution used by catalogers and art historians it is a movement identified by stylistic hallmarks such as the specific approach to portraiture. During this period there was a significant interest among both professional artists and skilled amateurs to capture "types" or character studies of local figures. unknown
189013331890. Ink and gouache with gold heightening on brown laid paper with a Jaipur Court Fee tax stamp in black ink 13 3/8 x 8 3/4 inches 340 x 222 mm. Toning handling creases and minor scattered surface soiling throughout. Scattered coeval Hindi inscriptions in ink on the recto and verso. The first revenue stamps in India were issued in the mid-nineteenth century during the Raj and they are still being issued to this day. Apart from issues for the whole of India many princely states provinces and other states also had or still have their own revenue stamp issues.

Before independence Indian revenue stamps were closely modeled on similar designs from Great Britain as is the case with this carriage motif stamp from Jaipur. The stamps were issued to denote various denominations including rupees and annas. An anna or Änna was a currency unit formerly used in British India equal to 1â„16 of a rupee. It was subdivided into four old Paisa or twelve pies thus there were 192 pies in a rupee. When the rupee was decimalized and subdivided into 100 new paise one anna was therefore equivalent to 6.25 paise. This particular stamp was used as evidence of court taxes remitted for property dealings. unknown
