A rare account of the will of the wealthy tobacco merchant James Gillespie of Spylaw 1726-1797 who left a substantial bequest some £2700 to establish a school for poor boys and a further amount for a hospital for the elderly. The hospital later became workshops for the blind and was demolished in the 1970s but the school remains in operation though having moved premises several times as one of Edinburgh’s highest-ranking state high schools with alumni including Muriel Spark Ronnie Corbett and Alastair Sim. 1811blb02987New York: Bradford & Inskeep and Inskeep & Bradford 1811. 1st. Hardcover. Good. Bound but missing front and rear boards. Spine leather intact and book suprisingly tight. Spine is worn but shows original panels. Title page has name and date of prior owner - ""A. McIhenney US Army 1813"" Book was purchased at an estate sale of Alan McIhenney the great grand-son of original owner. Be the second owner of this 1811 book. Most of the plates are only moderately foxed but almost all of the text pages are totally clear of markings or flaws. Despite the lack of boards and a missing plate I believe not sure this is a great copy of an early and important piece of Americana. The Port Folio was a Philadelphia literary and political magazine published 1801-1814 by Joseph Dennie one of the leading scholars and authors of the Federalist period who wrote under the name Oliver Oldschool. Benjamin Franklin and many other intelligentsia of the day were contributors it quickly became the one of if not the most important magazine devoted to literature and politics in the United States.
