La serie chiamata Los Caprichos, è composta da ottanta incisioni, la cui prima edizione [l’unica a non essere pubblicata postuma] venne alla luce ne 1799. Curata in fase d’edizione dallo stesso artista, la serie fu commercializzata e dopo poco tempo ritirata dal mercato. Infatti, a causa dei numerosi soggetti che ironizzavano sulla società spagnola di fine secolo, il Goya subì una censura. L’interpretazione dei soggetti rappresentati su queste lastre, sempre enigmatiche, è spesso controversa. Etching with burnished aquatint and engraving, 1799. The series called Los Caprichos, consists of eighty etchings. This first edition of 1799, the only one not to be published posthumously, is imprinted on soft laid pape. Cured in phase edition by the same artist, the series was marketed and before long withdrawn from the market. In fact, because of the many subjects that mocked the Spanish society of the century, Goya suffered censorship. The interpretation of the subjects represented on these plates, always enigmatic, is often controversial. Harris 82, Delteil 84.

L’opera è una delle 3 acqueforti di Signorini preparate per le Fornicazioni di Fra Mazzapicchio edite per cura di Diego Martelli fiorentino ed illustrate da Telemaco Signorini. Si tratta di un delizioso libro d’artista, impresso in soli 100 esemplari. Raccolta di prose erotiche attribuite al francescano padre Didaco di San Friano (Borgo San Frediano, a Firenze), ornate da tre splendide acqueforti del macchiaiolo e impressionista Telemaco Signorini. Assieme ai «Primi passi» (1871) e alle «Storielline» (1876), sempre a petto delle prose di Martelli, questo libro compone un trittico che è ritenuto tra le migliori prove del Signorini incisore. “[…] forse il meglio della sua opera grafica […] il Signorini lo diede nelle illustrazioni delle tre raccolte di novelle veristiche di Diego Martelli […] Costretto a dir tutto in breve spazio, qui il Signorini vi riuscì senza disperdere le sue forze; e il segno aderì più strettamente al soggetto propostogli dall’amico Diego, che d’altra parte lo riportava in un clima ben confacente alle sue tendenze e ai suoi umori. Di questo gruppo, l’acquaforte che illustra la prima novella delle ‘Fornicazioni di Fra Mazzapicchio’, quella che dà il titolo al libro, vale per l’efficacia della rappresentazione e per un tocco magro e conclusivo, che superano l’evidente ispirazione letteraria” (cfr. Telemaco Signorini nasce a Firenze il 18 Agosto del 1835 e, nonostante prediliga gli studi letterari, suo padre, un modesto pittore della corte del Granduca, lo avvia allo studio della pittura e fu lui il suo insegnante. Dopo aver frequentato i corsi di disegno dal nudo all'Accademia di Belle Arti fiorentina, e dopo aver dipinto dal vero con Odorado Borrani e Vincenzo Cabianca, inizia a frequentare il Caffè Michelangelo, accostandosi ai pittori che in quegli anni stavano teorizzando la pittura di macchia, ossia i Macchiaioli. Durante un viaggio a Parigi conosce personalmente l'anziano Camille Corot, interessandosi alla sua pittura di paesaggi e Constant Troyon; tornato a Firenze, con l'amico Diego Martelli, consolida l'amicizia con Silvestro Lega e Odoardo Borrani, insieme ai quali dipinge nei dintorni di Pergentina, divenendo il maggior rappresentante dei Macchiaioli. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta coeva, rifilata ed applicata sulla pagina del volume, con testo descrittivo al verso. Dimensioni 60x82 mm, il foglio 113x125 mm. This is a delightful artist's book, printed in only 100 copies. It is a collection of erotic prose attributed to the Franciscan priest Didaco di San Friano (Borgo San Frediano, in Florence), adorned with three splendid etchings by the Macchiaioli and Impressionist Telemaco Signorini.
