This is the POET SCOUT's book of poetry of the America's Wild West. <br /> Originally born in Ireland 1847-1917 Crawford joined his family in Pennsylvania U.S.A. at the age of fourteen. Injured in the final days of the Civil War Crawford learned to read and write while he was recovering. <br /> Crawford under the influence of dime store novels headed West and pursued work as a journalist/correspondent and a scout most notably for the Black Hills Rangers and during the Great Sioux War. A rare "teetotaling" adventurer during the pioneering era of the U.S. expansion he rubbed shoulders with the likes of "Buffalo Bill Cody" and "Wild Bill Hickok" His character even managed a cameo appearance in the "Deadwood" book and T.V. series. <br /> LARIATTES: A Book of Poems and Favorite Recitations Inscribed by Captain Jack" is one of his contributions to literature showcasing his poetic talent and his ability to capture the spirit of the American frontier.<br /> Very Good condition the cover shows signs of wear and inscribed on the ffep by Crawford. Good only copy which while sound is rubbed slightly soiled and with creased throughout. An autobiography by Marcus J. "Scout" Younger later known as Bison-Bill presenting a detailed accounts of his transgressions and encounters with the law which begins in part: "Born in the land of the outlaws. on the 8th day of April 1874. on the great Mathies Ranch twenty-one miles southwest of San Antonio Texas. My father was foreman of the ranch and although my good mother named me Marcus J. as a tribute to the good physician. I was dubbed 'scout' by the first gang of cattle wranglers I ever got tied up with. ." He goes on to describe his exploits including the various gangs he was part of as well as noting his father was with of outlaw group the Younger Boys of Missouri his cousins were members of the Dalton Gang and the James Gang were friends of the family. This title is not recorded in Six-Guns and Saddle Leather but another title by Younger can be found Adams 2471. Rare. OCLC locates one copy at University of Tulsa. [Marcus J. Younger unknown

Baden-Powell authored the first editions of the seminal work Scouting for Boys which was an inspiration for the Scout Movement. Educated at Charterhouse in Surrey Baden-Powell served in the British Army from 1876 until 1910 in India and Africa.
