18086471Guadalajara: Apud Mariannum Valdez Tellez Giron 1808. Good. Three stitched fascicles totaling 30 manuscript leaves and fifteen printed broadsides and broadsheets completed both in manuscript and in type. Some folded. Straight vertical cuts from foot of one fascicle. Some dust soiling and toning; scattered damp staining and foxing. A few separations along folds of printed sheets. Head of some printed sheets trimmed away effecting some loss. A fascinating combination of printed and manuscript material relating to the completion of Baccalaureate requirements for degrees in divinity from the University of Guadalajara in the early 19th century. Present here are three stitched fascicles each relating to a different student that contain manuscript attestations from the candidates themselves and university professors to the individual's achievements as well as printed copies of their degrees and other official documents from the university bestowing honors upon their recipients. Each recipient was conferred a copy of their degree completed in manuscript and affixed with the printed seal of the university attesting that after four years in the study of "Sacrae Theologiae" he had achieved the rank of Baccalaurens. Then the three students Gabriel Sanchez Leñero Joaquin de Valdecañas and Miguel de Talaveras received different printed broadsheets completed to varying degrees in type and in manuscript according to their specific studies an accomplishments. In all we identify eleven different printed forms and broadsheets none of which are located by Medina or OCLC. Most bear the imprint of Mariano Valdes Tellez Giron the first printer of Guadalajara who worked alone in the city from 1793 to his death from an epileptic seizure at the end of 1807 making the present job work some of the last printing completed by this important printer. Some of the broadsheets printed on two joined leaves and folded into each fascicle have been trimmed at the head with the loss of some material including engraved illustrations. Nevertheless the present documents represent a trove of previously unrecorded early job printing from Guadalajara. Apud Mariannum Valdez Tellez Giron unknown

Both photographs are stamped "Campua" and dated March 27 1952 on the versos. One photo pictures the procession to the Pardo Palace of MacVeagh in a gilded coach drawn by six horses followed by 50 soldiers of Franco's personal Moorish guard. It was the same coach in which Washington Irving went to present his credentials to the regent during the Carlist wars in 1842. The second photo pictures a handshake between MacVeagh and Franco MacVeagh having presented his credentials to the Generalissimo. Foreign Minister Alberto Martin-Artajo stands in the background. The photographer's credits are stamped in purple on the verso. Likely once mounted into an album there are black paper remnants adhering to the verso of each photo. In addition there are 15 small snapshots many cropped from larger photos of MacVeagh's time in Spain.
Lincoln MacVeagh 1890-1972 a Renaissance man graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German French Spanish Latin Greek and Classical Greek. After World War I he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947 testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland the Union of South Africa Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value." 16759Women's Education Movement. Pamphlet/ Volume 14 of 17: Acts for the State of Massachusetts January 12th Session 1804 Incorporation of Bradford Academy Containing the original incorporation of Bradford Academy. Bradford opened as the first coeducational institution in Massachusetts but due to overwhelming interest from parents of girls with no other option for education Bradford soon transitioned to become the first all-female academy in Massachusetts and among the first in the United States in 1836. Only three examples of these early Incorporation Acts could not be found among Institutional Collections according to OCLC Worldcat.

Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial. When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." Young women were quick to step up to the challenge; as quickly as female colleges opened they filled up. But this document predates Seneca Falls by 40 years and Bradford was among the very first institutions to educate women in the United States. unknown books

"The Aphorismes of the Kingdom" Thomason E.24026 and "The Commission of Array" Thomason E.24027.

The Thomason catalog is a collection of approximately 22000 books and pamphlets made by the London bookseller George Thomason between 1661 and 1662 documenting the political struggles between Parliament and the Crown during the Civil Wars Revolution and Restoration. An annotation on the Thomason copy reads "Printed 6 October 1642 at London by Allen in Popes head alley". The Allen referred to is undoubtedly the London bookseller & printer Benjamin Allen who was active from 1631 until his death in 1646. Located in Popes head Alley he published much of the political and theological literature of the period.

In the lead up to the first English Civil War Charles I and the parliament clashed over control of the armed forces. The King revived the medieval "Commission of Array" forcing local lords to raise troops for the Royal cause. This pamphlet is often attributed to Willam Prynne 1600-1669 who had been freed from prison in 1640. His persecution by the government of King Charles I and the Church of England escalated the antagonisms between the King and Parliament in the years preceding the English Civil Wars.

This anti-Royalist pamphlet is also anti-Church. The concluding pages 55-60 titled "Englands Tragedie" compare the antagonism between Parliament and the King to the "War in Heaven" as described in Revelation 12.
[London: Allen in Popes head Alley, October 6], [1642.] paperback

1864734c6244New York: John Bradburn. Fair. 1864. Reprint. Hardcover. 479 pages. Translated from the French. "The object in translating this work the production of a sparkling and witty French writer De La Hodde is to show the dangerous consequences to society and government arising from the practices of secret associations. It gives a perfect illustration of the operations of these associations in bringing about the present unprincipled rebellion in the United States. French characters similar to the leading conspirators against our own government are set forth in a way that gives the reader a clear insight into the science of demagogism and lays open that nefarious class of political transactions which must tend to the ruin of any country whatever and especially to one which is governed by republican institutions. New light is shed upon the darkling work of secret societies; their demoralizing consequences to society are exposed and their deeds of subterraneous deceit and treachery brought to the contempt and detestation of all good true and loyal men." - Preface.
