EDIT 16 CNCE 23145; Gehl "Advertising or fama: local markets for schoolbooks in sixteenth-century Italy" in Costas ed. "Print Culture and Peripheries in Early Modern Europe" 2012. Corners a little bumped boards lightly chafed title page a bit soiled and browned four leaves affected by the same small burn hole a handful of words partially obscured another leaf with very small damage from ink burn-through occasional faint foxing or minor ink stains but still a pleasing copy the binding perfectly satisfactory and the interior with no major defects the historical charm of the annotations compensating for any blemishes they cause.

This is the first and only printing of a scarce textbook on rhetoric by a Perugian professor of the subject charmingly decorated and annotated by an early--not very attentive--pupil. In the 16th century the market for textbooks tended to be regional. Schools and teachers wanted works produced by local scholars and printers a preference Gehl relates to their earlier reliance on manuscripts shared and recopied by the teachers who used them. He notes that "Perugia . . . had a particularly lively market for learned books that lasted from the early days of printing right into the 17th century" and local professors were a ready resource for publishers like Andrea Bresciano.

In the present work Saxus ca. 1499-1574 a pupil of the great Perugian humanist Francesco Maturanzio 1443-1518 outlines the principles of persuasion giving examples of the various rhetorical devices and modes citing classical sources. According to Gehl our author "was an innovator . . . who made a serious attempt to facilitate learning by catering to the limited attention span of students and by including teaching tips to grammar masters." We have evidence of what he was up against in regard to the former in the doodles of a prior owner of this text who was apparently dreaming of galloping away from the classroom on a trusty if seemingly headless steed. On another page the face of a master or fellow student peers critically from a margin. But some attention was paid as shown by the notes at the end of the book.

Saxus' writings never managed to break into the major markets of Rome and Venice but continued to be printed after his death in Florence and Perugia where Gehl says "he could be considered a regional celebrity" whose former students used his textbooks to teach their own classes. We could trace just one copy of this work in auction records. ex officina Andreae Brixiani unknown

We could not locate much more information on him in the sources available to us. The present work gives detailed instructions and diagrams for kindergarten students studying the Froebel gifts with colorful illustrated examples. According to the preface: "There is no Kindergarten occupation more pleasing and interesting to children than that of paper-folding … This little work is intended to show how the paper-folding occupation lends itself to the cultivation of the designing powers in children." It is also noted that "Juniors" can use this book as preparation for the study of geometry. The A.L. Educational Series focused on children's creativity and learning-through-play concept that was one of the central tenets of Froebel's educational method. Other titles in the series include Guide to the Drawing Examinations 1892 by D.E. Hillier and Paper-Flower Making 1897 by I.A. Williamson.
E.J. Arnold & Son, hardcover

The report describes difficulty in raising money to pay for more buildings teachers and books and notes that “The public sentiment is adverse to the education of Freedmen and Poor Whites.â€1 Given the area’s poverty indicated by Norton’s report the fundraising by formerly enslaved people to buy land for the school must have taken remarkable effort and sacrifice—education was a critical cause for African Americans and significant progress was made during Reconstruction in spite of poverty and violent backlash.

1 “North Carolina United States records†images FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9TC-6PJVview=explore image 104 of 567; United States National Archives and Records Administration. 19005954Fulton Pittsburgh 1900. Faux cloth over marbled boards with ownership label to upper left corner with school district and compiler information. Measuring 9 x 11.5 inches and comprised of 22 pages of sketches herbal specimens and sample essays all recto. Firmly bound and with some dampstaining to the lower gutter not affecting text. Representing a range of exercises completed by state normal school student Flora Yagle the book presents researchers with a range of study opportunities including turn of the century pedagogical practice and curricula as well as genealogical and social history work regarding the family structure work and education of first-generation immigrants living on the East Coast.

One of seven children born to German immigrants Flora Yagle b. 1886-7 clearly grew up in a family that emphasized education and upward mobility. The paper label identifies Yagle as an eighth-year student indicating that she was probably in her early teens when she completed these lessons. Census documents from around the time of her birth and childhood list her father as a foundry worker; and into her adulthood they shift to record him as the general manager of the foundry. Similar ambition was instilled in his children who are documented in census information as students or unemployed during their childhoods with work only appearing in their adulthoods. During Flora's youth she had brothers working as clerks and bookkeepers. By the time of her adulthood she has become a school clerk while her sister has obtained a position as a librarian.

Part of Flora's training would have been conducted at the Fulton Elementary School located in Pittsburgh's Highland Park. A neighborhood for the rising middle class Highland Park and its schools were still in their infancy while Flora was in hers; while the residential district had been opened in 1879 the school was founded in 1894 and both intended to provide fresh air open spaces and pleasant living to skilled workers and their families who were flocking to Pittsburgh for its work opportunities. Historically Pennsylvania had been a vanguard for public and progressive education. "In his 1830 address to the state legislature Governor George Wold championed the cause of universal public education" as a scaffold for "the security and stability of the individual privileges we have inherited from our ancestors" Explore History. Before the decade was over "more than 1000 local school districts under a single statewide system of instruction" had been founded working to regularize "educational standards curriculum and instructional credentials" in tandem with the 1857 Normal School Act which founded "a network of ten state academies to prepare public school teachers" Explore History.

Flora's generation was a beneficiary of these policies. Her notebook shows a range of work with creativity and visual arts central to her learning. In addition to pressed floral specimens likely from the school grounds or her home garden her book also contains a visual and textual representation of the spectrum of colors in a rainbow; illustrated lotus blossoms with a short essay on the botanical facts and cultural uses of the flower in Egypt; black and white sketches focused on perspective and shading; geometrical figures designed to be cut out and folded but here present; and figure drawings of children in Victorian clothing much like she and her classmates would wear.

US Census 1890 1900 1910 1920. unknown
1940515H4332London: Francis Aldor 1940. Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 261 pages. "Nazi theory has evolved the concept of 'Lebensraum' living space - Nazi practice has realised the fact of 'Todesraum' death space" - subtitle. Author conversed with scores of Polish refugees in Paris. "As I listened to their stories I saw with searing vividness the similarity between what is happening in Poland today and what happened in Belgium 25 years ago; the similarity and the difference which lies in the fact that the Germans today are even more brutal more bestial than they were in 1914-1918. I decided to publish these stories together with an essay comparing German conduct during the last war and during the present one and showing that if they have changed at all it has been for the worse. Some of the stories are so horrible that they exhaust all ordinary human capacity for horror and indignation. However some at least of the victims of German blood lust have escaped death. Let them speak." - Publisher's Statement pages 6-7. Heavy soiling to publisher's yellow cloth. Front hinge starting. Moderate foxing to and near endpapers. Dust jacket not included. A worthy reference copy of this grim testament to the suffering of the Poles in WWII. Enser p.341. Francis Aldor Hardcover
1955441j1375London: Victor Gollancz Ltd. 1955. First British Edition. Hardcover. "The authors were convinced that the decision to withhold from Dr. Oppenheimer one of America's most distinguished scientists the security clearance which would enable him to continue as chief adviser to the Government on scientific matters was a miscarriage of justice as unworthy of the fine traditions of the American past as the trial of Captain Dreyfus was unworthy of France. They contend that the parties to certain high-level disputes wanted Oppenheimer removed from his position of influence in these disputes. Includes a scrupulous analysis of the proceedings." - dust jacket. "J. Robert Oppenheimer 1904-1967 was an American theoretical physicist. He was director of the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II and is often called the 'father of the atomic bomb'". - Wikipedia. 208 pages.
