Tall 12mo., First Edition, with engraved frontispiece, some light offsetting to title; original boards, backstrip with paper label (browned but legible), very neatly recased, boards moderately age-soiled else a remarkably well-preserved crisp, clean copy with broad margins in original period binding. With 4pp publisher's advertisements dated May 1818 bound in at end. The frontispiece is engraved by Freeman from a drawing by Hilton. Ann Taylor's classic homily achieved a third edition in 1819 and a fourth in 1820.

In-8° (203x128mm), pp. LX, 410, bella legatura coeva in p. pelle marrone marmorizzata con dorso liscio adorno di titolo in oro su tassello, filetti e ricchi decori ornamentali e floreali in oro. Tagli e risguardi marmorizzati, segnacolo. 3 tavv. f.t. (di cui una all'antiporta, con ritratto dell'autore coronato da serti da due figure allegoriche muliebri) incise su rame da Lacour in fina coloritura acquerellata coeva; le restanti due tavole raffigurano rispettivamente una donna ed un uomo nudi su uno sfondo naturale. Ex-libris moderno. Usuali fioriture. Ottimo esemplare. Sesta edizione (la prima è del 1775) di quest'opera che per prima inaugurò un approccio organico ed unitario allo studio della donna dal punto di vista medico e morale (essa volle porsi come la "base d'une anthropologie féminine"), da un lato volta a sottolineare la differenza tra i sessi, dall'altro riconfermante il ruolo sia riproduttore che domestico della donna. Assai bizzarre le tesi del Roussel sulle mestruazioni, le cui cause sarebbero più sociali che biologiche. In appendice sono presenti una "Notice sur madame Helvétius", dei "Doutes historiques sur Sapho" e una "Note sur les Sympathies". Annota Weiss in Michaud, Biogr. Universelle, XXXIX, pp. 158-160: "Ouvrage non moins remarquable par l'élégance et la chaleur du style que par la profondeur des recherches et la finesse des aperçus.. Cet ouvrage est le principal titre de Roussel à la célébrité. Il y a rassemblé des faits curieux, qui tendent ò constater la réalité de l'influence de l'imagination des femmes enceintes.. ". Il Roussel (Dax, odierna Ax les Thermes, 1742- Châteaudun, 1802), illustre medico discepolo di Bordeau, è oggi ricordato precipuamente per la presente opera, originalmente situata allo spartiacque tra medicina e filosofia. L'autore dell'elogio preliminare del Roussel è Il barone Alibert (Villefranche-de-l'Aveyron, 1766-Parigi, 1837), il massimo dermatologo francese del secolo decimonono, medico all'Hôpital Saint-Louis e medico personale di Luigi XVIII.
