Per la raffinatezza, la concisione e la chiarezza del suo stile, Vauvenargues appartiene alla grande tradizione dei moralisti dell'età classica francese, da La Rochefoucauld a Chamfort; tuttavia la sua opera presenta tratti di grande originalità. In essa domina un'etica fondata sul sentimento, la quale contrasta vivamente con il razionalismo imperante del suo secolo: con il culto tipicamente settecentesco per lo spirito arguto, talvolta frivolo, e spesso tagliente fino al cinismo, Vauvenargues svolge un'analisi minuziosa e disincantata delle passioni umane, senza per questo arrivare a condannarne senza appello l'irrazionalità; egli anzi rivendica per esse la funzione di autentico motore delle azioni umane, e della loro grandezza e nobiltà; e nella virtù e nel desiderio di gloria riconosce i valori supremi cui ogni gentiluomo dovrebbe conformare il proprio comportamento. L'originalità del suo pensiero, e la morte prematura, hanno fatto ingiustamente di Vauvenargues una figura marginale nel panorama della filosofia settecentesca: egli però ebbe il tempo di essere ammirato da Voltaire, che all'epoca era già una delle figure di spicco della scena letteraria in Francia, e in Europa.
