Scenes range from studio portraits and school pictures to military service graduations home life street scenes travel and family gatherings. During these years Black Americans made major gains in wages education urban employment and home ownership even as segregation redlining and unequal access to the 1944 G.I. Bill continued to block many families from the full benefits of postwar prosperity.<br /> <br /> 51 black and white and sepia silver gelatin photographs. Measurements range between 2"x 3" to 4" x 5". Women pose in tailored dresses graduation attire and formal portraits including one small portrait labeled "School Days 1944-45." Men appear in suits sailor uniforms Army dress and sergeant's uniform; children stand in yards beside cars and in front of brick apartment buildings; adults gather in living rooms with a television set beside automobiles outside homes and along city sidewalks. A few captions identify relatives by first names or nicknames preserving fragments of family memory within a larger record of education service respectability and mobility.<br /> <br /> This archive centers on African American advancement before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when military service schooling church and family networks professional dress and property ownership carried particular social weight. Minor surface and edgewear some edges clipped and some toning throughout. The scenes of soldiers graduates automobiles urban housing and multigenerational gatherings place this family within the postwar Black middle class where achievement was built in the face of restricted schools segregated neighborhoods and unequal access to federal benefits. unknown

The binding is tight. The lower front corner is lightly bumped. Very good. 49 leaves illustrated with 352 black-and-white or sepia-toned photographs between 1.75 x 2.5 and 8 x 10 inches in mounting corners or glued down almost all annotated in ink with the name of the subject the date and sometimes the location. Oblong folio. Contemporary plain brown pebbled cloth photograph album. Minor wear to extremities light dust-soiling to boards. Numerous empty mounts throughout but the 350 remaining photographs are generally well preserved. A large annotated vernacular photograph album containing over 350 pictures most of which relate to the Schuler family who split their time between Texas and New Jersey. The pictures capture family members and numerous friends of all ages and at various activities such as the celebration of holidays like Easter and Christmas enjoying the beach in Galveston posed with their automobiles raising children at childrens' party and fishing at Lake Worth among other settings. Identified family members and friends hail from numerous Texas towns such as Fort Worth Houston Dallas Big Spring El Paso and the aforementioned Galveston and Lake Worth. Most of the New Jersey pictures emanate from Trenton. A handful of images also picture people in Pennsylvania.<br /> <br /> The sheer number of identified subjects from the Schuler and many other families provides ample opportunity for cross-referencing geneaological information for Texas and New Jersey families in the Schuler orbit in the early 20th century. Several of the more interesting photographs capture the construction of the Universal Tire & Rubber Company in Houston. Some images relate to World War I including Joseph and Fred Schuler posed in uniform a shot of "Fred and two of his buddies taken on the transport on his way home 1918" and ten pictures from a parade celebrating the 36th Division in Fort Worth in 1918. A few photographs depict the "Interior view of Our Home Houston Heights 1918." An interesting family photo album offering a glimpse into the growth of a large family depicting some individuals growing older over the years encompassed by the album. unknown

Archive of identified Japanese American wedding photographs documenting postwar Nikkei community life and the rebuilding of Japanese American social and commercial institutions in Northern California during the early 1950s. The material captures formal wedding celebrations and social relationships within Japanese American communities during the years following World War II incarceration and resettlement. The photographs provide visual evidence of the reestablishment of Japanese American-owned businesses including ethnic-specific photography studios that served as important cultural and social institutions after wartime internment disrupted community life throughout California and the West Coast. Particularly significant are the inscriptions and studio attributions which situate the images within networks of kinship friendship and Japanese American entrepreneurship during the postwar reconstruction era.<br /> Collection consists of three silver gelatin wedding photographs dating circa early 1950s. Photo cards measure between approximately 12 x 11 inches and 9 x 14 inches with mounted photographs measuring approximately 9 x 7 inches. Two photographs depict the same Japanese American couple identified through inscriptions as "Mr. & Mrs. Ben Adachi and Ronnie." One image is a formal studio wedding portrait while another portrays a larger wedding party composed entirely of Japanese American participants and inscribed "Love Mits & Jayme - 12/6/52." Both photographs bear the imprint of Toyo Studio of Sacramento a Japanese American-operated photography business serving Northern California's Nikkei communities during the postwar period. The third photograph depicts another Japanese American couple identified as "George Ets Okasaki" posed alongside their wedding party before a curtain backdrop in a staged studio setting. The matte bears the handwritten inscription "To Ben and Rosie - Love George Ets" and is attributed to Kuroko Studio likely another Japanese American-operated studio in Northern California. Across all three images the couples and attendants are dressed in formal Western wedding attire including satin gowns floral bouquets veils tuxedos dark suits and boutonnières. The repeated dedications to Ben and Rose suggest close social or familial relationships linking the couples represented throughout the archive.<br /> <br /> The photographs document a significant period in Japanese American history marked by postwar community rebuilding after the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. The diary was a gift to a young girl named Jennie Boldrey from Santa in 1892. From context we can determine that she lived in Indiana likely in or near the community of Aurora just west of Cincinnati Ohio. Although the book was given to her in 1892 it appears to have been used not by Jennie but by young Anna Annie Boldrey in the later 1890s. Our informal research has not been able to identify any additional biographical information on the two girls. The album's pages are full of loving messages and best wishes for Annie from family and friends. Some pages are adorned with stickers or pictures cut out and pasted to the page such as flowers or birds. Some examples of the handwritten messages Annie collected in her special album: My Dear Daughter Annie May your road be long and and the end be far out of sight face it bravely strong and mery. It is 100% complete. The cover is in fair condition. It shows many wear marks and the exterior of the spine is torn in places. The binding has broken and many of the pages are loose.
