Two volume set in slipcase. Includes Bausch & Lomb magnifying glass. Full blue cloth boards; gilt lettering on spine. The books themselves are in Very Good condition, with sharp edges and bright white pages. Slipcase shows some wear, spots,, bumps and small tears. Broken and missing plastic pull tabs inside case that are there to help pull the books out of slipcase. This extremely heavy set will require extra postage for priority or international shipping. This is the compact edition of the original 20 volume bound set of the Oxford English Dictionary, published by the Oxford University Press. The O.E.D. is the world's ultimate authority on English vocabulary, diction, usage, and etymology and includes about three-quarters of a million words.

For the first item there are four candidates - Roger Newdigate George Hay Francis Page and Charles Jenkinson - are arranged in columns down one side of the page whilst each college member classified as scholar fellow student chaplain and so on is listed on the left. Curiously it appears that each member gets two votes though some only use one. Each college is tallied and the final result is at the end Sir Roger Newdigate appears to have been elected. From the library of Daniel Conner Connerville / Manch House with his Exlibris / Bookplate falsely applied upside down to rear pastedown. This 1808-version of the Statutes of Oxford University is citing the important change of Statutes of 1610 in which it was decided between the Bodleian and the "Stationer's Company": "to provide a copy of all books printed to the Bodleian and in 1610 Bodley made an agreement with the company to put a copy of every book registered with them in the library". This resulted in the Bodleian collection growing "so fast that the building was expanded between 16101612 known as the Arts End and again in 16341637. When John Selden died in 1654 he left the Bodleian his large collection of books and manuscripts. The later addition to Duke Humfrey's Library continues to be known as the "Selden End"." All colleges of the University of Oxford have their own libraries which in a number of cases were established well before the foundation of the Bodleian and all of which remain entirely independent of the Bodleian.
